Kev take a look at Iview media pro http://www.iview-multimedia.com/. My camera club uses it for digital competitions when the judge says he / she wants to see an image again it can be flagged by a single keypress. There is no visible intervention on the screen but if say the "1" key is pressed that image will be flagged red. To recall all the "see again" images then a filter is set to show only those flagged as red. Sounds complicated in the telling but is very simple and works very well. On the see again runthrough different number keys can be pressed to flag an image a different coulour say green for commended yellow for highly commended and blue for the winner. Thes colours are assigned to different number keys ie 2 = green etc. The only thing to remember is that the software uses the upper number keys on the keyboard and not the number pad. Hope this helps Geoff

If your menu is going to run other PTE shows, don't forget to turn off hardware acceleration in the menu exe. Regards Geoff

Hi Dom I use a Nikon D70 and shoot exclusively in raw mode, as this gives me the maximum choices for output to jpg's or tiff files (for printing) I have now taken 20,000 images with this camera and still remain very satisfied with it. Geoff

Many thanks Dom I'll give that a try. Geoff

Igor many thanks for your thoughts, I'm sure you are right and 16 x 9 is the way to go, however it's a bit confusing with many camera clubs having bought 4 x 3 projectors which have as yet had little use. There is therefor little enthusiasm to change to 16 x 9 for projected slideshows just yet but I'm sure it will come as equipment needs renewing.

Thanks Igor, an interesting read. I would be interested to know what your feelings about this are, considering that most camera clubs I come in contact with seem to have gone with DLP, and if I remember correctly from some time ago, your preference was then LCD. Geoff

Thanks Igor works fine now Regards Geoff

Sorry Igor typo on my part. 1) Select slide 2) shift + end to select all to the right 3)ctrl + click on first slide in selection to deselect it 4)ctrl + click on same slide to reselect it. By ctrl clicking on the same slide again it appears not to be possible to deselect it until the second slide in selection has been ctrl +clicked to deselect that. Not the easiest thing to exlpain (and it may be a quirk on my system) but hope there is enough info for you to look into it. Can I make anouther plea for "select slides to right" on right click menu, as when moving large numbers of slides on the timeline the fact that shift+end takes you to the end of the timeline is a bit of a pain. Very best regards Geoff

Hi Lin I did a slide show using 1024 x 576 images and burnt to DVD the quality seemed OK ( still on analogue TV ) however the TV showed about 92% of the image on screen. It seems to me that the only way to display full image on TV is to have a 1024 x 576 black image and then in photoshop resize the images to 942 X 530 and paste each one onto the 1024 x 576 black background. This means that the area outside the TV safe zone is black, and the full image is contained inside the safe zone. I tried the same DVD disk on a friends 37 inch plasma TV and give or take a very small amount the area of picture cropped was the same. I intend to repeat the same slide show but using 1820 x 1024 black slide and then crop my images to 1674 x 942 and save as above, giving the same proportions but a higher pixel count. The images are all raw files so it's easy to reprocess at the higher values. I'll post back the results of this test. Many thanks for all your help. Geoff

When working in the timeline if a slide is selected and the keys ctrl+end pressed to select all slides to the right, if the block of slides is then moved one should be able to hold ctrl and click on one slide to deselect just that slide. However if that slide is the first in the selected block it does not appear to deselect. if you control click on the second selected slide to deselect it, then control click on the second slide again to reselect it then you can ctrl click on the first slide in the block to deselect it whilst leaving the remaining slides selected. Not sure if I've explained this very well but perhaps someone will give it a try to see if I'm correct. I use it a lot when doing large slideshows when moving blocks of slides on the timelime, and it's always worked fine in previous versions. Geoff

Thanks to all for the info. I am looking to buy a projector for my own personal use to show a mixture of slide shows and still images. We purchased the clubs Optima about two years ago, and it has been in constant use since then with no problems. We also recently purchased a spyder calibration device as we run an annual national competition which this year attracted an entry of 2600 images, so correct colour projection is very important. I would recommend the spyder to anyone it's easy to use and gives excellent results. Having said all the above I'm always willing to learn from other's experiances, and with the speed that technology moves on new products are constantly coming on to the market. Geoff

I'm starting to do some research in order to make the best purchase of a digital projector. Our camera club has an Optima DPL projector which seems to give good results. However I seem to remember Igor saying that LCD produced the best results (why is nothing ever straitforward with technology). I would appreciate some feedback of forum members experiances, good and bad, in assisting me in my decision making. Many thanks Geoff

I installed AVG free version 8 and seem to have suffered a speed hit on the computer. Has anyone else taken the plunge yet, and if so have you noticed any reductions in performance? Geoff

Thanks to all for the very detailed information. The image ratio of my camera is 3:2, which if I use a full frame resized to 1024 gives me 1024 X 683. If I convert to DVD this gives me gives me black bands top and bottom of the screen. Logic says that if I crop and resize my images to 1820 x 1024 this should give me a 16:9 ratio slideshow. If I then convert this to Pal DVD (720 x576) will the aspect ratio of 16:9 be maintained. Lin I appreciate your very detailed explanation, however at the moment I tend not to use zoom or rotate in my slideshows, and only occasionaly use pan, so degrading of the image is not really an issue. As Barry says in his question what I am after is ideal image size to maintain quality, to retain the correct proportions and to fill the screen of a 16:9 TV when converted to PAL DVD. Many thanks Geoff

Whats current thinking on the best image size to use when creating PTE slideshows, that when converted to DVD fill the screen on a 16:9 TV set. Thanks Geoff

Security Invasion Potential by Microsoft
stonemason replied to Lin Evans's topic in General Discussion
Hi Xaver probably you are right and this particular piece of information has little relevance to PTE as such. My point is that we now have ten replies discussing the validity of placing this thread here in the general PTE forum. I think that passing on the info is valid and as this happens so infrequently then the general PTE forum is the best place for it. Obviously if the numbers of threads in this vein started to increase significantly then it would need to be looked at again. Hopefully people will be sensible and research the topic further elsewhere if they are interested, or ignore it if they are not. Let's not get into a situation where people have what they consider useful information, but do not share it with others, because someone else may not consider it relevant. Best regards Geoff -
Brian these look very useful, thanks for your kind offer to share them. Geoff

Security Invasion Potential by Microsoft
stonemason replied to Lin Evans's topic in General Discussion
Does it actually matter if occasionally an "off topic" thread which may be of interest to forum members is started in the PTE forum it's not as if the board is swamped with such things and as far as I'm concerned anything that is connected to computers and operating systems is relevant to a PTE which relies on both these things operating as they should, to enable us the users to get the best from PTE. Peter may I suggest that you use Unchecking the "Keep taskbar on top of other windows" and nothing else as this works fine for me so maybe there is some conflict with the other things you are doing. Recreate your PTE menu exe with no other workarounds make sure use 3d acceleration is turned off and I'm sure you will have no further problems. Regards Geoff -
Ron was the first to answer my very first PTE question on this forum. He was a very helpful man and will be much missed. Geoff

Peter try my suggetion above (right click on windows taskbar select properties, and Uncheck "Keep taskbar on top of other windows"). I don't use vista so it may not work but if it does then it's a very simple solution. It certainly works with XP pro Geoff
