Can't open .pte'sin 7.5 if 8.0 is installed (Win8)
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
======================== Dave, Yes, I normally have it 'ticked'. I have always done this and never had this problem. I installed 8.0 on my desktop and my laptop the same way, both ticked. I don't have this problem on my desktop, but do on my laptop. I will uninstall 8.0 on my laptop and reinstall with it 'unticked' and see what happens. But....there seems to be a difference in the way 8.0 gets installed in Win8. On my desktop I can save a .pte in 7.5 and reopen it in 7.5, no problem there. Gary -
Can't open .pte'sin 7.5 if 8.0 is installed (Win8)
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
================== Greetings Everyone, I have 8.0 installed on both my desktop (Win7) and on my laptop (Win8). On my desktop (Win7), I can open a .pte file in 7.5, edit it, save it, and it will reopen in 7.5. When I do this on my laptop (Win8), it opens only in Win8. I can open 7.5 directly and work on a file, but when I save it and reopen it, it only opens in 8.0. I know how to set the default opening program in Win7 and Win8. I have done this to try to set the default to open .pte in 7.5. But it still opens in 8.0. I have installed 8.0 in my desktop (Win7) and my laptop (Win 8) exactly the same but the results are not the same. Anybody else out there using Win8 with 8.0? Lin, When I open 7.5 first and navigate to a .pte file and open it, it opens in 7.5. I save it (in the 7.5) but when I reopen it, in any other way, it opens in 8.0. Gary -
Greetings, I don't know if this is a PTE problem or a Win8 problem. I can't seem to open a .pte show in 7.5. They keep opening in 8.0. On my Win8 laptop, I have 7.5 and 8.0 installed. I don't want to save any current PTE shows in 8.0, yet. I want to keep working and saving past shows in 7.5. However, when I open a .pte file (from MyComputer) that was formerly saved in 7.5, it opens in 8.0. So I then I do an 'Open With' of the .pte file and browse to 'PicturesToExe.exe' in the 7.5 folder, it still opens in 8.0. Even if I open the 7.5 version and then do a 'File Open' of a .pte show, and then do a 'Save As', and then open the .pte, it, again, opens in 8.0, not 7.5. What's going on here? Is this a Win8 problem or is there something in the installation of 8.0 that is causing this??? Thanks... Gary

========================== Ken, Thanks for the link. My laptop has the WiDi capability and I'd like to know if anyone has use the Push2TV device to show their PTE shows. Just wondering if there is any lag or weakness in the transmission of the exe or the MP4 file. I use the Western Digital media box to show the shows on the TV but it might be nice to go wireless. Gary

Greetings, I would like to know if anyone has tried to use any Push2TV device (WiDi) to display PTE shows from a laptop to a TV. Thanks... Gary

========================\ Jose, I gave it a try in my 7.5.10 and it converted just fine and played (upside down). So I don't know why you are having a problem. Gary

Why can't File List find proper location of files?
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
============================= Peter, No, it still does not show the correct folder in the File List. It defaults to whatever PTE show folder that was previously shown in the File List. The only way to get the proper folder shown in the File List is to browse back to the location and find the proper folder. Then a Save As will keep that folder location. Since it knows that I opened the .pte from a particular folder, it seems that it could (should?) be able to feed that info to put that same folder in the File List as the default. Gary -
Why can't File List find proper location of files?
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
========================================= Peter, The File List will only point to the correct folder if I browse to the correct folder and reset it to that folder. Then, only after I do a Save As, does the correct folder gets set. But the point is that I don't want to have to do the browse process. We all preach that all files for a slideshow should be in the same folder (and where the .pte file resides). So if the Save As point to the correct folder (where the .pte file resides), I think opening the .pte file should automatically bring in the same File List folder as the Save As process would. Doesn't that make sense??? This seems logical to me to make this the default and let the user decide other locations, if needed. Gary -
Greetings, I recently made a suggestion that a Default Folder setting for PTE shows be made as a setup item. Now I see that there is another sort of quirk along this line that I don't understand why it happens. I have copied all of my PTE folders from my desktop PC to a laptop. When I open a .pte file on the laptop that has been copied, I have to re-set the proper folder in the File List that contains all of the associated files for each show. It defaults to a previous show's File List folder's location. This is pain if you have lots of slideshows. However, I notice that before I go through a re-set of the File List to display the associated files for a particular show, I can do a File Save As, and it points to the proper folder where the .pte file should be saved. So, my question is, if the File Save As knows where the proper location of the .pte file should be saved to, why can't the File List, itself, set itself properly to the correct folder where all the associated files for that .pte show are located???? (Of course, this assumes that we are following the rule to keep all of our images, sound files, video files, etc., in the same folder, and this is where the .pte file is located, too). Gary

=================================== You should be able to drag around images to any other spot. I'm not sure what you mean by drag AND drop. Once they are in the slide list (or slide view), you can move them around as you wish. Maybe I don't understand your problem. Gary

Greetings, I think I have noticed an inconsistency when I try to convert video clips. Normally, I will convert a video clip only after I have trimmed it and added it to the Timeline. When I have all of the video clips as I want them, I will them do the converting. When I convert a single video clip by right-clicking on the video clip in the Timeline, and choosing Convert Video Clip, the video clip will be converted AND will replace the original video clip in the Timeline. That works just fine. However, when I add several video clips into the Video Converter window, and then do a Convert All, it seems that only the first video clip that gets to 100% gets replaced in the Timeline. I have to then find each of the remaining video clips in the Timeline and manually do a Change Video File for each of them to do the replacement. Is this what others are experiencing??? If so, I'd like to know so I can put a suggestion to fix this inconsistency. It would be nice if all of the video clips in a group got replaced as it does when you do a single converting of a video clip. Thanks... Gary

=========================== Bruce, Try F4 for 'Full Screen' view. There is a small triangle icon in the lower right corner for that, too. (to the left of the 'Slides' tab). Gary

(Solved) Font not found in Win8 (but was in Win7)
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
============================== Lin, I noodled it out. In the end, it was an easy process. Here is what I found, and hopefully it will be useful for anyone else who has this problem. I used an EasySuite cable (best thing since sliced bread) to copy all of the fonts in my Win7's font folder (C:\Windows\Font) to a new folder on my Win8 laptop. Then, I highlighted all of the fonts in this folder and right-clicked the mouse to get a window that has the 'Install' selection. When it starts to do the install of the fonts, it might tell you that a particular font is already installed. I would not overwrite those. I'd just skipped those already installed so as to not cause any problems with them. In my Win8 laptop, I started out with 290 fonts. After this process, it now show 719 fonts. I noticed that some of the fonts that have numbers as names in Win7 show up with text names in Win8. PS The EasySuite cable is a USB cable with the software built into it. Just plug one end to one PC and the other to the other PC and you can copy files from one to the other. Wonderful device. About $20, I think. Gary -
(Solved) Font not found in Win8 (but was in Win7)
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
Lin, Yes, I understand what your are saying. But, I'd prefer to simply have all the fonts that are in Win7 to be in Win8. Is there a way to do this? I made a couple of tweeks in the show that is now on my laptop and the font has now changed. Real pain in the neck. This may be the only font problem, but who knows? Gary ================================= -
Greetings, I just came across a problem that I am not sure how to fix. I have copied all of my PTE shows from my desktop PC, which has Win7, to my laptop which has Win8. I was looking at a particular show and I noticed that a font had changed when I view the show on my laptop (Win8). The font that I originally used on my desktop PC (Win7) was 'Blair'. When I looked in my laptop (Win8) for the font list in PTE's O&A for the Blair font, it is not there, and another font was substituted. This is not a PTE created problem, I am pretty sure. But Win8 does not have the same fonts as Win7, apparently. I would hate to have to inspect each and every past show to insure all the fonts remained the same. I Googled around and found that I should look in the Windows/WinSxS folder for 'Blair.ttf' but there is no 'Blair' at all. I also searched on 'B?.ttf', too. Not there. I also tried the following suggestion to 'Unhide fonts based on language settings'. But it did not work either. Is these a way to get back all the fonts I had in Win7 to be installed in Win8? This can cause a lot of havoc if the fonts can 'disappear' between Win7 and Win8. I did an Internet search for the 'Blair' font but the font I found was not the same font that I have in Win7. Any advice???? Thanks...Gary

========================= I mentioned this in my posting above. Go to the WMP's executable file (wmplayer.exe). Right click and you might see ("Run with graphics processor") where you can select which video card you want to make default. Now this happens in my Win8 laptop that has an added graphics card so I don't know if it will show up in whatever operating system you have. But take a look. I did not like the effect it had when I did this with PTE; made it a bit jittery. But I have not experimented doing it with any other programs. Gary

Greetings, It would be helpful if we could have a Default Folder option for the File List window. This would be similar to how Excel and Word allow for a default folder. I recently copied all of my PTE slideshows from my desktop to my laptop. When I first open a .pte on my laptop, I have to browse in the File List to find the folder associated with each .pte show. Once saved, it keeps that association. But it would save a lot of time and mouse clicks if it would default to the PTE folder where all the shows are saved. Thanks... Gary

====================== Peter, That is interesting. So it comes back to my initial concern. How do you determine that any particular program is actually using the dedicated Nvidia card that you have assigned to it? How did they know the assigned card was not being used? Gary ADDED LATER: I just was playing around with one of my PTE shows after I had changed the default from the Intel 4600 to the Nvidia GeForce GT740 with 2mb. I noticed that an animated of text and the panning of a couple slides seemed to have a little jitter in the movement. I then switched the default back to the 'Auto' selection of the graphics card. The panning looks smooth now. Hmmmm..... Well, I guess the answer it to leave well enough alone and let the PC decide. If anyone has any idea about what is actually going on, please let us know. Thanks... Gary

(Solved) Can a series of MP3's in Timeline be highlighted to be mo
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
==================================== Jill, Thanks much!!! I tried everything except that. The usual Windows command with Shift or Ctrl keys did not highlight them. Your solution with just the Shift key worked just fine. Gary -
============================= Greetings, If I may jump in here with an observation and question that has to do with this 'integrated vs. dedicated' graphics card question. I recently purchased a laptop, my first. I went ahead and added an Nvidia graphics card with 2Gb of memory. Why? Just to be safe and it was only $75 more. When I asked the Toshiba tech guys about how the integrated graphics card worked with the added Nvidia card, they said the laptop will choose it automatically based on the demand. Hmmmm... I did not like that answer because I wanted to know when it was being used or not being used. Anyway, I just found an interesting discovery. If I right click on a program's executable file (.exe), I get a choice of which graphics card can be assigned as the default to that program. I have Win8. So this might be useful for those who might have not discovered it yet. But...my question is, does it make sense to change the default integrated graphics card to the Nvidia for PTE or Photoshop, etc? Or just leave it to default to the integrated (less powerful) Intel HD 4600 card and hope it really is using the Nvidia when needed? Gary

Greetings, I have 15 MP3s in my Timeline. I need to move the last 12 or so of these MP3s as a group to nudge them all at the same time to the left. As it seems now, I have to do it one at a time, which will disrupt the precise crossfading I have already have set for these 12 MP3s. Is there any way to highlight all 12 as them as a group and move this group of MP3s to retain their current crossfadings? Thanks... Gary

============================ Sure, but it does not catch the stuff that Malwarebytes catches. You need several different programs. You can't rely on just one. I have MSE, too. Try Malwarebytes just for the fun of it. Easy to install; easy to dump. Gary
-
================================= Leo, I figured that. I like it so I will probably purchase it too when the time comes. Times have changed. I notice now that many of the formerly 'free' programs that I have been using are now for purchase. Getting a new laptop and trying to install the same programs are now popping up with prices. And some don't work with Win8 so you have to buy their newer versions. Great marketing concept. Get us hooked on the freebee...then $$$$. :D/> No problems though. Gary

======================== Leo, I, too, use Malwarebytes. A couple days ago, I experienced the same thing. Then I remembered your posting. And I updated my Malwarebytes and the problem disappeared. At first, I thought, here we go again...virus. But it is good to see it cleared up. But I have a question about your Malwarebytes. I put Malwarebytes on my desktop PC a long time ago and it was free. Now, I just put it on my new laptop and it is the same build version, but it say "Trial" as the top of its opening window. I thought I saw on this "Trial" version that it was good for 30 days, but now I don't see that indication. Does yours say "Trial" and will it function after this "Trial" period??? Gary

Greetings, I know this issue has been raised before. In Dec. 2011, a request was made for all files used in a show to be bolded. Currently, only the primary file that is used in a show is bolded in the File List. I am currently going back to one of my old shows to do some tweaking. This show has the same background (or primary) image in each of the slides. In O&A, I have added video clips to each background image. So each slide contains only the background image and the added video clip. The problem is that the File List shows only the background image in bold, but none of the added video clips are bolded. I have the original untrimmed videos and other images in the File List that were not used in the show, but they all look the same, unbolded. Those files that were used as non-primary files and those that were not use are all unbolded. So here are my suggestions: When an image or a video clip is used that is not the primary image in a slide, have it highlighted in the File List is some way, such as a different color (for example). Also, it is difficult to identify the images (as a group) that are used in a particular slide. For an example, if you have added several images or videos in a slide, it would be very helpful if, when you highlight a slide in the Slide or Timeline View, all of the images and video files that are associated with that slide are highlighted (perhaps in a background color) in the File List. So as you go from one slide to the next in the Slide or Timeline View, the different images and video clips used in that slide will be easily identifiable. As it is now, you have to go through the O&A's to determine the file name of each added image or video clip in each slide. Thanks... Gary
