Monitor and PC for PTE, Photoshop + basic hd video editing
goddi replied to Philip Fennessy's topic in Equipment & Software
====================== Nobeefstu... It will be great if that will solve some of the hardware problems. I just remembered that there is the 'virtual-pc' installation for Win7. I won't be able to test this out for a few weeks but maybe this will allow the legacy scanners to function within Win7. I will give it a try when I can get to it. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ Gary -

========================== No huge rush. Thanks for the info. But if Nikon and HP are not making their drivers for their old scanners, is it going to make any difference with a Windows7 SP??? Gee, I hope this really might be a fix! I'll be glad to wait. Thanks... Gary -

============== Thanks, Brian. Lots of good info to chew on. I'll be working on it in the near future. I see that SilverFast comes in a less expensive 'beginners' version. I will check it and Vuescan out. Sincerely, Gary -

====================================== Nobeestu.. Yikes, it ain't cheap!!! I'd have to think long and hard about SilverFast. Here is what Nikon is saying about not providing compatibility in Win7 for some other products: "We DO NOT plan to provide Windows 7 compatibility for the following applications: * Picture Project * Capture NX (v.1.x) * Camera Control Pro (v.1.x) * Wireless Camera Setup Utility * Nikon Capture 4 * Nikon View 6 * Coolpix Remote Control * DVD Show We DO NOT plan to make SCSI- or Serial- connected products, or their associated software applications, compatible with Windows 7. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. For more information regarding this matter, contact Nikon Customer Relations. We hope that you will continue to choose Nikon for your photography needs." Gary -

============================ Brian and Tom, When I try to install the HP Scanjet G4050 scanner, I get the message that "This registry key does not exist and is required for the installation to continue..." It shows it needs the slbcsp.dll, sccbase.dll, gpkcsp.dll and Enum. I thought that copying these from my WinXP to the Win7 PC would make it work but I assume that would not solve the problem. I am working on getting my old WinXP PC working again and do as you suggest and will just use it for scanning. Also, I forgot about the Vuescan software, Tom. I will try that when I get back in town soon. It really is disappointing to have perfectly good hardware become paperweights. Thanks, Gary -

============================= Brian, I have a question sort of along the lines of the above discussion, but more toward the hardware conflicts with Windows7 as opposed to software conflicts. I have the Windows7 Professional 32bit version. I have been able to install many programs that did not want to install directly into Windows7, using the Windows7 Compatibility Mode to successfully install these programs. However, I have run into a brick wall when trying to install some hardware with my Windows7. Specifically, I have tried to install my Nikon slide scanner. No luck. Also I have borrowed an Epson slide scanner and an HP slide scanner and have had no luck in trying to install them, even when trying to install the setup.exe file and changing its Compatibility Mode to WindowsXP or Vista. No luck. What appears to be the problem is that these companies will not develop the drivers that are needed to function with Windows7. So my question is, is there any workaround to being able to use these now-paperweights? When I tried to install the HP scanner, for example, it showed a list of dll's that are needed and missing, but I don't know what to do at this point. Are we out of luck at this point when it comes to hardware incompatibility with Windows7? I have 1000's of slides I'd like to get into PTE shows but I'm still behind this brick wall with these older scanners. I have not yet tried the 'Virtual PC' setup. Is this worth the effort to try it? Thanks... Gary P.S. I tried the links in your Intel-Tech Pdf file but they would not link to the Intel-Support sites. -
Copying Slides from Show a to Show b - SOLVED (again)!
goddi replied to davegee's topic in General Discussion
============= DG, I just took a look at this and I had no problem copying slides from the Slide List from one show to another. I used Ctrl C and Ctrl V, and I tried the Paste in PTE's menu in the recipient show. No problem. I am using Ver. 6.5.3. I opened the first show and did a Copy; closed it; opened the recipient show and did a Paste (not greyed out). All images showed up. Gary -
========================= Greetings Mickp, I don't use a lot of different transitions, etc. because I have seen some shows that tend to overuse them, and, I guess, I shy away from making it too glitzy. But you have a point in making it more interesting. I usually prefer to just use the simple 'fade', maybe a zoom or pan, here or there. The show (number of images) was so long, I was afraid of extending it with the more, longer transitions. The point of the show was not to demonstrate my 'good photography' (thanks for the compliment) , but to lead the viewer through the (long) trip, more of a travelog. But I appreciate your points and I will strive to do better and be more creative. It really is a learning process of not only in the presentation but in learning what PTE can do. One of the big debates that goes through my head is, "I've got the right piece(s) of music and I have to put the right set of images in its length", and "I've got the right set of images and I need to find the right piece(s) of music to fit the images into". Drives me a bit nutty. It's like trying to hit a moving target.... Thanks... Gary

==================== Mary, Yes, I can not disagree on the length being loooooong and the size of the file. I was almost embarrassed to post it. But I always put in the NAV bar for those impatient like me. But whittling the 1500+ of my images down to under 300 was quite a feat for me. And I didn't include any of my wife's almost 1300 images! The opening map sequence was a real bear for me. I had to use 7 red rectangles to create the route. I did tried to make it move faster. I got it to work but I could not get the speed adjusted to move faster for some of the sections. It got so complicated that I was happy to just get the darn thing to work. Glad you did enjoyed the show anyway. Besides going on the trip itself, I like making the PTE shows almost as much. Gary

=================== Greetings Greg, Thanks for the comments. I didn't really know how to handle the ride up the mountain on the gondola. I sort of wanted to give the impression of the quick ride up. And then I didn't want people to get bored with a longer drawn out assent. I cut out many of the interim shots. The show was long enough! It was a great trip to Croatia and Slovenia and I just want to share it with everyone so they might want to see that area of the world too. Gary

Greetings, This is a show of our drive through Slovenia to Zagreb, Croatia. The show is 16x9; 100Mb; NAV bar is active; 18:32 in length. It's a long show but it is a long route. I didn't want to break it into 2 parts but I hope you enjoy the trip. These two countries are beautiful and worth the visit. The show is fast moving so I hope it keeps your interest. Comments, critiques are welcomed. http://www.beechbrook.com/pte/downloadfile.asp?id=1887 Gary

============================ Mark, It is always nice to 'visit' a place that I have not been to before, via PTE! Nice show. I'd like to make a few comments, if I may. First, I think I would have sync'd the voiceover. I, for example, after I viewed the entire show, wanted to fast-forward to the images of the dogs and pause the show and call over my wife to see this section...she loves the huskies. However, the images paused but the voiceover continued. My second comment is about the length of the transitions. The transition period seems to be almost as long as the image is on the screen. I noticed this also with Barry's recent show. I feel I am looking at the faded-in image for too long and not enough of the 'clear' image itself, so I tend to want to look away until the transition is finished. How long do you have the transition set to? I am curious. Also, I would have put in a title slide at the beginning just before the voiceover starts. Seems to start a little abruptly without something telling me where I am about to visit. Thanks... Gary

Greetings, I have just posted route up the coast of Croatia. I made it into 2 parts and are posted on Beechbrook. Yes, they are kinda long but it is hard to put several weeks of travel into a shorter show. But the NAV bar is active so it is easy to zoom through it or just esc. I just hope it keeps your interest. Part 1 of 2: The show is 16x9; 62Mb; NAV bar is active; 10:52 in length. http://www.beechbrook.com/pte/downloadfile.asp?id=1885 Part 2 of 2: The show is 16x9; 43Mb; NAV bar is active; 8:40 in length. http://www.beechbrook.com/pte/downloadfile.asp?id=1884 Comments, critiques are welcomed. Allow the arrow keys to do a "Next" in O&A
goddi replied to goddi's topic in Suggestions for Next Versions
================= nobeefstu, I figured it out just before I read your email. I did not see the F11/F12 text in the mouseover. I thought using the keyboard arrow keys were more intuitive. But thanks for the quick reply. Always something new to learn in PTE! Gary PS I tried to delete my previous duplicate posting but it won't allow me to do it. -
Greetings, It would be very helpful if the numeric keypad's arrow keys (#4 and #6) could be made to do the "Next" and "Previous" function in the O&A window. The Tab key already allows you to jump from item to item in the O&A menus. To give the arrow keys the ability to do the "Next/Previous" would make it less tedious to do a repetitive selecting an item in the O&A menu. You can have one hand on keypad to do the "Next/Previous" and the other hand on the mouse to click on the menu choice. Thanks... Gary

How to copy a slide from one show to another?-Solved
goddi replied to goddi's topic in General Discussion
============================= George, My slide has 49 objects in it and I was afraid that I would miss one of them by having to select each one in the actual O&A window. But, after reading your posting, I discovered that I can do the Copy in the Objects List window (all at once-Shift/End) and then Paste them in a new slide. Works like a champ. I just didn't think I could do a Copy of keyframes within the Objects List. Thanks for the tip. It also works if you have only one PTE opened and then do the Copy. And then close it and open the other show where you want to paste it in and then do the Paste. Thanks for the tip. Gary -
Greetings I know I have done this before but now I just can't seem to make it happen. (Windows7) I want to copy a slide that has a very complicated map route with many keyframes from one PTE show to another PTE show. Can someone point me in the right direction? I do the copy/paste but nothing shows up. I have opened 2 versions of PTE at the same time to try to make the copy/paste but it does not work. Thanks... Gary Added later: I does work if I have only one PTE opened and do the copy and then close that show and then open the show I want to paste it to and then the paste works. Why will it not work when I have 2 PTE shows opened at the same time???

Add a 'Remove Slide' button in O&A screen
goddi replied to goddi's topic in Suggestions for Next Versions
========================= nobeefstu.. Yes, I understand that is one way to do it. Still too much mouse movement and clicking. However, I prefer to be in the O&A screen because that is my 'working' area. I can keep my mouse pointer on the 'Show Next...' button and run through each image. When I want to dump one, I can then just click on the Remove Slide button. If I want to tweak an image (pan, zoom, add text, etc.), I am already there on the 'working' area. The workflow you describe is doable but I think adding the 'Remove Slide' to the O&A page makes working on the slide show a bit easier. And, being in the O&A, you have control over how large you want to view the image as you run through them. Doesn't this make a fair amount of sense? Thanks... Gary -
Greetings, I find it easier to do a review of images in the O&A window since we have the opportunity to increase the size of the image for a larger size. It would be nice to have a 'Remove Slide' button while in the O&A window. This would reduce the need to hit the 'Close' button and click on the 'Remove Slide' button and then have to go back to the O&A screen. Gary

Linda, I am no expert in these matters. But, if I remember correctly, others may have solved similar problems by bringing the MP3 file into Audacity (free program-download from Internet), and then just 'Export' it as an MP3. Sometimes, this has fixed such problems. Worth a try, and Audacity is a great program to have with PTE. Gary

=============== Peter, I've recently been having some problems (long story) with my BitDefender Antivirus 2011 so I just uninstalled it and re-installed it. I went back to the site and it didn't show any problem with it. So, perhaps it was just a fluke with my software. Thanks, Gary
-
======================= Greetings, As I startied to view this website, I got the following warning from my BitDefender Antivirus Pro 2011: "This webpage was considered untrusted and has been blocked by BitDefender!" Can you tell me why this might be happening??? Thanks... Gary

=================== Greetings Trailertrash and Mickp, The clouds appeared early in the morning and I really felt 'up in the clouds'. There are many other little towns to be seen in the area. Having a rental car gave us the ability to zoom around and explore towns that you don't even see on the maps! Thanks...Gary

============================ Xaver, I have tried different setting for the creation of MP4s and haven't found any improvement from the default settings. Perhaps the additional settings are for certain circumstances that I have not run across yet...like heavy animation. With my particular model of Samsung TV, it will recognize the MP4 file created in PTE (like yours?). So I can play the MP4 that I copied onto a thumb (flash) drive (or an external hard drive) and plugged into my Samsung's USB port. Not all Samsung TVs can do this. I had a list of those that could, but can't find it at the moment. It is a very nice feature. And actually, I like the Samsung's operation better than the WD Media Player box because it will allow rewinds and fast forward operations in a much smoother fashion. Gary Added later: I just found the reply I had received from Samsung on which units play the MP4 format: "The units listed below will offer MP4 video playback from either a USB device or from your PC. LCD: LN26C450 through LN46C750 LED: ALL LED TVs Plasma: PN50C530 through PN63C8000."
