flickering transitions and won't auto run
alrobin replied to wyattsmom's topic in General Discussion
Hi, Wyattsmom! Welcome to the Forum! Here is a link to MS Knowledgebase which might help: MS INFO. Autorun can get a little complicated with Win XP. Re the flickering, you will find it occurs more noticeably when going from high-key (light) images to darker images (dramatic differences in contrast), or vice versa. It is also a function of the size of your image files, what else is working on the pc in the "background", how much you have in the way of computer resources (RAM, speed, etc.), and the speed of transition (cuts and slow fades usually display less flicker). Also, Igor has added a couple of lines to the apr.ini file to reduce flicker. However, depending on how you installed the upgrade to version 4.20, they may not have been added. See this REFERENCE for info. Check your ini file to ensure that they are there. Hope this helps! -
Tiffany, No link yet, so I presume you haven't made it work yet? If you are having trouble getting the link to work, send me the address to your site, and I will have a look at the HTML code from this end. By the way, your FP should add the HTML code for the link to your slideshow automatically. Once you drag and drop the slide-show file, "MyShow.exe" into the FP file list on the left-hand side, it will be be accessible to your page. Then open the page you want to add the link to by double-clicking on its name in the list, and add your reference to the slide show. Highlight one of the words or images on the page, right-click on it, select "hyperlink", browse through the list of possible files shown and select your slide-show file name. This will add a URL to the file. Save the page in FP, and upload it to your site. You mentioned that you successfully uploaded the slide-show file, so you don't need to upload it again. Hope this helps.

Ray, There's nothing new on that one yet. Another useful feature would be to enable multiple actions - then a button could at least be programmed to first do the "click", followed by "open slide show".

Maybe that's why they left the old address active!?
-
Guido, The solution to your problem is very simple. Use FORUM, not OLD FORUM .

Hi doublex, Welcome to the forum! What happens if you shut off one monitor and put everything on a single monitor? What if you slide the menu over onto the same monitor as the rest of PTE? Is PTE on the primary monitor? Re the positioning of text on the video, you have to leave approx 10% allowance around the edges to avoid clipping on the TV image. See several postings in the "how to create video" forum.

Tiffany, No, how could I be sick of you - I don't even know you? It sounds like you are almost there. It depends on where you put the file on your site as to what you need to add to your page in FP. You probably added it to the root of your web site. In that case, just open your main page in FP, and add a line with a hyperlink to the name of your slide show (with no pathnames included). Then save this main page file, and upload the new version of the main page to your site. Then browse to your web site, and test it out by clicking on the hyperlinked name or image, or however you added the URL link. If this doesn't work, come back to me and I'll help you trouble-shoot it further. If you don't want the link on the main page, you can add it to any other existing page, or to a brand-new page, which in turn has a link to an existing page on your site. Be sure to make note of any sub-folders, as you will have to include the name of the subfolder in your link, but FP will do all this for you.

Tiffany, I use Front Page to create the pages, and then free utility, WS_FTP95, to do the actual uploading. You can also upload and download to and from your site by typing your web address, e.g. "ftp//www.mypage.com", in the address bar of your browser, and then entering the userid and password when requested. In IExplorer this opens a page similar to a Windows Explorer menu to which you can drag and drop your PTE file from Windows Explorer, e.g. "myshow.exe". Hope this helps.

Hi, Tiffany, Welcome to the Forum! There's always room for more! You can upload a PTE slideshow file to your website and save it there for others to download and play, but you cannot publish it on the web as the files are too large, and it would take too long for the images to download while the show was playing. If you upload and save it to your site, make a reference to it on one of the pages so others can find it and download it. You can see an example of such an arrangement on my own web page HERE .

Thanks, Granot! (expecially coming from someone who knows what good work really is! ) By the way, I have corrected a small error in the narration document accompanying PTE101 which was kindly pointed out to me by GĂ©rard de Lux. The numbering opposite the narratives for slides 77 to 80 is incorrect. However, you do not have to download the entire zipped file to update your own copy - I have posted a revised version of the MS Word ".doc" file, "narrative_v4-20.doc", on my Website.

Dave, I have to click on "yes" too, to enable the macros every time I open Adjustor. For me it is a minor annoyance, so I doubt if I will be issuing a new version just for this. I'll look into it next time I put out a new version (no earlier than next winter, as the weather is too nice here now to spend more time in my basement playroom than I have to. ) Sorry for the inconvenience.

David, As Roger indicated, adding transitions in time to the music is available on the synchronization timeline. Granted, it doesn't allow you to click a key to indicate the transition you want, but it does allow you to hit the space bar every time you want a new slide to show, or click on "New transition", if you prefer to do it that way. (note that you first have to "train" PTE by clicking "New transition" the first time, and then the space bar will repeat that command whenever it is pressed.) Note that in sync mode, the numbers you enter manually in Project Options or Customize Slide for slide duration are ignored, and the only way to enter the values is via the timeline, either by pressing a key or button, or by entering the values there numerically, or by having the program spread all slides evenly over the music duration. You do have to enter numerically "Fade for 1.5 seconds", however, but there are so many transition possibilities that it would be difficult to program them all into the keyboard keys as short-cuts. It is fairly straightforward to set a default transition in "Project Options", and then go through and change the special ones. However, I don't mean to imply that this is the only way to do it, and you do have a point in that some additional mechanization for, say, most commonly used transitions, would be very useful.

You should be able to do this with Adjustor. Following along David's suggestion, create your random numbers in a separate unused column (e.g. col. "V"), sort the slide-name column ("B") according to the resulting random numbers, and then send the data to the "ptesource" spreadsheet (by pressing "Transfer to ptesource.xls" and then "Save as a .prn file"). Unless you also modified some of the times in Adjustor, the new text file, when renamed as a .pte file and opened in PTE, should display all the slides in the new order in the slide list, with all the timing intact as before. This will only result in a single random order - every time the show is run, the order will always be the same.

Len, If you mean how do you test the capability of it all to run properly on the CD, then there is only one way to test it - burn a CD. However, you can verify that your menu works properly by creating your "sub-shows" and saving them to the same folder as your introductory ".pte" file. Then open the intro in PTE and do a "preview". Everything should work just as it will once you burn the CD.
-
Len, Just add the names of your applications (or secondary slide shows), without path names, and be sure to put them in the same directory on the CD as the main ".exe" file.

Ken and Steve, You are right - it is the old one. Sorry about that! I had trouble getting my MS FrontPage to recognize the new one, so guess the old one is still there. Will look into it and report back. OK, it seems to download properly now. As a former BC minister of highways used to say, "Sorry for the inconvenience!"

Version 2 of my PTE101 tutorial is now available through Beechbrook (page 4). It has been updated to cover new and revised features in PTE v. 4.20. Just click on the old listing, and the new one will be downloaded from my web site. Please let me know if you have any problems accessing it.

Jen, Welcome to the Forum! Sounds like it might be a defective mp3 file. Do you still have your .pte file for the show, and does it run ok there in the preview? If so, try saving the .exe file again. Good luck!
-
Catlem, You could try re-installing the Photosmart software. Uninstall the existing software first.
-
Ron and Patrick, Dave did mention that it is a truncated show - maybe he left the music as is, and tossed out some of the images. I wouldn't mind seeing the whole show.
-
Dave, I had a look at your show and it seems pretty good to me. Most transitions are smooth on my P4, but the slower the pc, the more "flutter" there will be, so you have to think of your prospective audience, too. One thing you may have noticed is that where you are transitioning to a dark image from a light one, and vice versa, the flicker is more noticeable. Sometimes you can plan the order of the images so that this is minimized. It's going to be a nice show, though - I'm sure the bride will be amazed! I like the music you selected, too.
-
Igor, That's fine - just do your thing - we're waiting patiently for the new features, so don't worry about the Forum - the rest of us will take care of it. Thanks so much for your ongoing hard work on our behalf - we are truly grateful!!!

Hi! Welcome to the forum! This is a common problem. The registration is administered by a separate company (I think in the US), whereas WnSoft is in Russia. The key file is a text file, and it gets embedded into the email sometimes, as in your case, so it looks like the attachment is missing. You may be able to salvage it. However, it should look like the following: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PTE] "key"="xxxxxxxxxxxxx" If you do try to salvage it, you will know when you have the right pieces if the resulting text file is 231 bytes in size. If this doesn't work, sent WnSoft an email and get them to send you a key in a zipped file. Good luck! Ciao, Al

What are the specs for the laptop? Is it also running Win XP? Are you also running an external .exe file from the main slide show? Be sure to close out all other running programs to free-up resources for the PTE shows. Note that the ".pte" file won't run on the laptop unless you also have all the image and music files there, and in the right directories. The free-standing ".exe" ("created" show) should run, though. Try several other exe files too to make sure it's not just a faulty file (for example, some of the ones downloaded from Beechbrook). Good luck!

Hi, Dean, Welcome to the Forum! No, this is definitely not normal for a properly-constructed show. After you register, you will receive a "pass-key" attached to an email which will give you access to all the features of the program. When you are putting together a show, be sure it is running properly in "preview" mode before "creating" it. There are a number of reasons for shows crashing midway - faulty music file, transitions clashing (too close together, or overlapping in a "synchronized" show, not sufficient pc resources, etc. If you want the background music to cover the entire show, be sure to add it under "Project Options / Music". The most sure way to control the timing of both the music and the slide transitions is to use "synchronized" mode and the "timeline". There you can also see the slide-duration times as well as the transition times, and correct any abnormalities in the way you have set them up. The best way to resolve apparent conflicts in a slide show, especially when you are new to the program, is through experimenting and trial-and-error. But, don't hesitate to come back to the Forum for assistance if all else fails! Best of luck!
