A Useful Addition for PTE I think...
jfa replied to Lin Evans's topic in Suggestions for Next Versions
I would like to add my name and "third" the request. -
Well that has convinced me.

Barry I too have to agree with Patrick, Ken and the others. The viewer is the "customer" and the author is the "manufacture" if the maker doesn't provide a product the customer can use easily they will not buy it. It's my PC and I don't like to be told how I must use it. This is the cry that I often hear when software tries to dictate how the user must work. Look at the resentment the PC user commentary has for Microsoft because of this. Microsoft eventually had to change and allow the user the choice of browser etc. that they wanted to use. Sorry Barry but we humans are funny people in our likes and dislikes. EDIT - Ken: I found your like not to work. http://www.scantips.com/cgi-bin/survey.cgi ?????????

Have a look here: http://www.peakhill.btinternet.co.uk/digit...dio_visual.html Select Pictures To Exe v. ProShow Gold. This is an excellent in depth, unbiased and I think very accurate comparison of the two.

This is something I came across by accident searching for something else and I thought I would share it, as it may be of interest to AV makers. This is an old Billy Joel song and you can see the images associated with his words. Try not to blink, it moves so fast my memory brain cells are workin' hard to keep up with the images. A few of you may be TOO young to remember all these events. Turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy a review of 50 years of history in less than 3 minutes! When it starts, be sure to click on the FULLSCREEN command in the upper left. Note also the years of occurrence in the lower left corner, and you can see the lyrics by clicking the on/off lyrics in the lower right corner. http://home.uchicago.edu/~yli5/Flash/Fire.html

I enjoyed this show a lot Dave, thanks for taking the trouble to post it for us. The lighting on the faces was spot-on and the occasional burnt-out highlight in the background/clothing was not an issue with me, the faces were the centre of the show and they were handled very, very well. As for better equipment well I wish I could get these results with mine. What did you use? Great choice of background music and the mat was a good idea also.

Bob in this commercial/capitalist, (sorry I don't mean to be political just realist), world you get what you pay for. If it's free well expect the unexpected. But remember you are using the Internet and it is impossible to be 100% secure. All care but no responsibly would appear to be the motto on the NET.

Welcome to the world of PTE A-Vs and the user forum old timer, you will find lots of friendly help and advice here. This forum is a great source for advice, guidance and ideas. The sense of community helps make working with PTE more creative and pleasurable. I have been down this long and sleepless path and the one life-saving tip I used was to get my slides commercially scanned. The result was close to what I could achieve in quality, (the odd one I then did myself if I wasn't happy with the commercial scan), and saved me literally weeks in time. Me too, nobody wants to buy it these days. Even with a HDTV the computer screen and a .exe file will look better than a DVD. Our Camera Club compared a PTE created .exe file run from the PC through a BENQ SP830 digital projector with the same show on our old Kodak carousel 1050 projectors on the same screen. The general opinion was the digital show was brighter, better saturated colour and a little sharper, all in all everyone was happy with the digital result. Have a look at this discussion re- converting analogue 2/3 projector shows to digital. http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index....842&hl=scan

I hope you don't mind me copying a few seconds of your shows audio to demonstrate what I mean by "rumble" Peter. Enclosed on this post are two files, the first direct from the start of the AV and the second is the same file with the "rumble" removed. There is still slight handling noise and a few other very minor thing that could be removed but I think the difference between the two files demonstrates the point. Best to listen with a little volume increase to hear clearly the difference.

I didn't see the original but enjoyed v6 of your AV very much. The effect on the cross with the zoom and the fads was very effective. Well done Peter. A small, (very small), critique on the opening and closing soundtrack. When we hear the birdsong at these points there is a noticeable background "rumble" in the recording. It may be possible to remove this in a sound editor or if not I would suggest bringing the bird song into the soundtrack after the music has started as the music tends to mask this noise, image 3, the white flowers would be an appropriate point to do this at the start. At the end just fade the music very slowly. The "high-frequency notes" didn't worry me but there was a little to much birdsong used throughout the show as commented on earlier. Perhaps remove it in the middle where the zoom on the cross is used and where the stone structure is the main subject. Bring it back in on the image of the cross on top of the roof with the lovely soft bare trees in the background. Just a few small points on a very enjoyable show, thanks for it Peter.

The upgrade to v5.x is a free upgrade as are all future upgrades for the base PTE product, and upgrade to the Deluxe portion, (the DVD burner), which is what you require carries a $20 fee I believe. See here: https://www.regnow.com/softsell/nph-softsel...e%20to%20Deluxe

You have grasped and mastered the techniques of the PXR screen in PTE very well Judy, and have put it to creative and original use here, well done. Thanks also for the delightful message.
-
Well done Judy. loved the bamboo effect and your photography was marvellous. A little long, but you already know that. Thanks for sharing.

PTE v5.1 will install to a separate location and you can have both versions installed and working on your PC. However if you open and save a v4 PTE file in v5 it will no-longer be able to be loaded into v4.31, (not backward compatible).
-
Pam do you mean PTE v4.31? If so I would suggest you upgrade to v5.1 deluxe and use the inbuilt DVD burner which will make production much simpler and hopefully fix your other problems. As many others have said on the forum the quality seen on a DVD/TV will not be as good as that on the PC.

Barry. I had a look at your "Artisrty of Balloons" AV and I was blown away, (sorry about the pun), beautiful. As you may know from previous posts I have been involved with, (passionate about), Hot Air Ballooning for some 25 plus years and your show presents them in a unique and wonderful manor. It was late in the 1980s that I meet Tony O'Connor recording some sounds for his Bushland Dreaming/Rainforest Magic series of CDs and I discussed with him suitable soundtracks for a Hot Air Ballooning tape/slide show which I was putting together at that time. In 2004/2005 a mutual friend sent me a pre-release cassette of the "Gentle Wind" track which I used in the "Riding the Wind" AV, (not the best recording hence the slight hiss). Since then I have purchased the CD but as yet not replaced the audio on the show. Re both of us using it, well great minds and all that. It is a perfect match to the Hot Air Balloons. The music in the show you asked me to look at "Artistry of Balloons" is "3 Jewels" according to your download page and it certainly isn't the same as "Gentle Wind" ?? Two minor roads within one kilometre of the recording site, I waited until it was quite and hoped. Ron I haven't tried the H2 with an external mike yet, I don't own a good one. The mike used on the samples was the inbuilt one. Tom What is the mike, (make and model), you used with the recording you made for Brian? I hope you don't mind me listening to your message to Brian, I think the result was very good for a PC input, the Griffin iMic looks like a very useful device. Brian and everyone else, thanks for the positive comments on my sound samples.

I have posted some sample recordings from my Zoom H2 on MediaFire here: http://www.mediafire.com/?3zbeclxuwg4 All recordings were made in WAV format at 44.1KHz, 16 bit stereo. The file Wind Chimes was recorded at approximately 3 Meters distance with Medium Gain, Volume set to 110 and the recording was normalized in the H2. All other settings were off. It is of the wind chimes on my back veranda and there is some background wind noise as I did not use the wind screen over the inbuilt microphone, something I would recommend doing in windy conditions. Also you may hear a pigeon fly past toward the end of the recording, (at about the 43Sec point). Chickens was also recorded at approximately 3 Meters distance with High Gain, Volume set to 120 and the recording was normalized in the H2. All other settings were off. The chooks, (as we call them here), were happily scratching around in their pen. The wind noise is apparent here also, particularly toward the end. Birds was recorded at approximately 8 Meters distance with High Gain, Volume set to maximum and the recording was normalized in the H2. All other settings were off. I have also used a background sample here to filter out some noise in my sound editor and raised the volume slightly. The parrots were sitting in a large Eucalyptus tree next to my orchard waiting for me to leave so they could eat my fruit. You may also hear the wind chimes softly in the background in the latter part of the recording. They were some 35 Meters away. There are 2 other files included. These were recorded along the creek that runs through my property. The first, Bush Birds ORG, is a small sample of the original RAW file from the H2 with no manipulation. The second file, Bush Birds Final, is the same file in full that has been "cleaned up" using a background sample as a filter, then normalized and amplified in my sound editor. I think this is well worth doing when the result is compared with the original. There is still some work to be done on this file, (remove the jet that flew over in the middle of the recording, wind noise and the noise I created moving around), before I would be happy, but I have included it to demonstrate Ron's point, which I also agree it is a excellent suggestion which I do as standard practice.

Wonderful to have you back on the forum Jean-Pierre. I'm glad to hear your health is better. I have missed you creative AVs and your extensive knowledge which you share here with us. Enjoyed this show very much, thanks.

Barry this is the link to a show I made over 12 months ago and posted earlier last year: http://www.mediafire.com/?7xdaio4jxxt It contains many small sound effects that I had recorded in the field with an old analogue tape machine which I have now junked in favour of the Zoom H2. The H2 is much more portable/versatile, gives better results and is more convenient to use.

A definite improvement David. Your choice of the texture and colour of the mat, (frame), was excellent and matched the images very well, in fact I think made them look better. On my screen, (set to 1280x960), the image looked as the attachment shows, which I don't think is a problem for me. If the image is not satisfactory when a viewer looks at any show that is set at a different resolution than their screen setting I think the answer is to set the screen resolution to match the show and reset it after viewing. It is no big deal to do this. Well done.

Barry I have been using the Zoom H2 for several months now and am delighted with the results. I reported on it here: http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7677 You can see the stats on it and watch videos on its use here: http://www.samsontech.com/products/product...6&brandID=4 If you let me know what the subjects are that you would like to hear recorded, I will see if I can make a recording and post it for you to preview. My wife and I are about to leave on a two week holiday so it may be a little while but I will try as soon as I get back.

Thanks Peter, great show I enjoyed it a lot. I second all the positive comment above. Looking forward to seeing more of your work here.

Welcome to the world of PTE A-Vs and the user forum Glenn, you will find lots of friendly help and advice here. I would suggest you download Lin and Jeff's excellent "PTE USER GUIDE" PDF document, which you will find under the Tutorial section of the forum. It may not be an answer to your specific P&Z question here but it will answer all/most of your general questions about PTE and save you hours. http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7202

There is always someone watching Mark!!

Just watched and enjoyed your final "Norway" show. I have followed the development of it, watching each version up to the final, and I have found the exercise informative. The process of "working up" a show can often be time consuming and get to the point where we can't see the hills for the mountains, this is where the input from another viewer can be very helpful. There are some very minor improvements that could still be made to your AV, (this is almost always the case with any show), but one very important judgement we must learn to make is when to stop. This is something I often struggle with and I think you have made the correct decision on this point. You have produced a very enjoyable show and I look forward to seeing your next effort, thanks Mark.
