Farleyjim, The issue is Norton and especially it sonar scan detection. Other virus protection programs also exhibit the same behaviour on one occasion or another. The business of protection is venturing over the line of possibility ... they need to start thinking along the lines of whats most a probability. I still use Norton on my main C Drive .... but most other drives I have excluded it use. Its has in the past tried to take out some of my compiling/programing tools because of its possibilities. Your best bet is to relax and reserve some folders or drive(s)space so as to be excluded. Users still need to use some common sense in their selection of settings.

A sad time for all of us here. I found JPD quite a remarkable person and he will be greatly missed ... but most of all he will be greatly remembered. Thanks JPD

Dan, Another reference to remember for the future: Whenever you use PTE's Preview function even though you may not save your current file ... PTE always creates a temp file named PreviewPteProject.pte in the User temp directory which has the latest addidtions and changes to generate the Preview. Please note that this is not a permanent saved file and is only generated for Preview and is usually removed/cleared when the Prewiew has finished. However, in the case of a forced shutdown or abnormal closing of the PTE program the PreviewPteProject.pte may still possibly exist in the User temp directory for later retrieval. If you use PTE's Preview again prior to retrieving the last state of the preview file ... you will loose that old preview file completely because it will be overwritten with a new preview file. Bottom Line: In the event of any crash or shutdown ... retrieve the PreviewPteProject.pte as soon as possible if it exists. It may save a lot of time and extra work in such a case as yours. Wait too long or run PTE again ... it will be removed or overwritten with another preview instance. ** In the event of Memory problems ... that preview file may not have been generated.

Finding the 'Desktop' in the Folder window...
nobeefstu replied to goddi's topic in Suggestions for Next Versions
Gary, I think the best approach to resolve your quick access to the Desktop ... is for PTE GUI to add/have a Desktop icon image (beside the other folder icon images) for quick access to the desktop files no matter if the folder tree is visible or not. This would offer instant access no matter what position one may be currently selected in the Tree view panel or File view panel. See attached image. -
How to create reproducible Template ?
nobeefstu replied to paul alford's topic in Styles & Templates
Paul, This would take some inital preparation the first time around to make a template ... but it should work: Make a Template : 1-First of all you need to name or rename all 50 Images using some alpha-numeric naming sequence. Also, name your Music files in some sort of named pattern. Use a file rename tool to perform this action. 2-Open the existing .pte file and replace the existing named images with the new alpha-numeric named image files. Replace the Music files. 3-Save the .pte file as a Template project file. **When you save the Template project file ... all images and music are copied and saved to the same named template folder. ---- Use the Template: 1-Now, all you have to do for future shows using the same template project file ... is just rename the new images and music you want to use to replace the current images and music using the same alpha-numeric naming sequence pattern with the aid of the file rename tool. 2-Next, copy the new images into the named template folder to replace the old files. 3-Open the template project file in PTE and create your new Exe. ** Make sure to follow normal file saftey and backup or retain original named files. -
Thought I submit this option again to add a Exe Version tab/stub information to the file properties of a compiled SlideShow. I could not find the original post made some years ago ... it may have been on the old forum that was lost. Most of the Version info can be preset while still allowing the User some ability to customize the Comments and Copyright information to suit their project needs. Add the ability as an option to insert Version information or not during exe compilation. Having the Version information on the compiled Exe will be greatly helpful in record retention as to what PTE build the slideshow was originally made with ... and also when uploading or sending slideshows for other users or clients for playback. I have attached a sample image for users to better understand this proposal.

Finding the 'Desktop' in the Folder window...
nobeefstu replied to goddi's topic in Suggestions for Next Versions
Gary, It appears you are currently using the Classic View or some variation. Play with the View Settings under the Classic View as shown in the attached image. You have user options to set Horizontal, Vertical, etc Views and the File Panel and Slide List settings as how you wish to display. Select the View settings and adjust the panel displays to suit and tailor to your needs. Any folder you select in Tree panel view will show the folder(s) contents in the File Panel view. -
John, It would seem your image file extentions have no program association or lost the ability to open by default in Photoshop Elements. Your easiest method to restore or create their association is to open your Photoshop Elements and set the image file associations which is normally found in the program menu bar under the name of user options or program settings. I dont have Photoshop Elements to explain precisely the menu names procedure ... but most image editor programs have such a menu function. Just select the image extentions you wish to associate with Photoshop Elements when you double-click the file. There are other methods to set file association using Windows Folder Options-File Types. However ... many pc users seem to avoid this method Windows offers because they dont fully understand this process. This method does offer the knowledgeable user flexable/custom ways for opening files with double-click and right-click options.

Dave, I find it interesting to read up on the knowledgebase available out there ... but Ive never ventured into multi-monitor setups to convey any first-hand experience. I do know there is several ways and means to achieve different resolution outputs depending on the available hardware and graphic adapter design, but also know many configurations or setups used have pitfalls and limitations when it comes to sharing resources and applications requiring 3D modes. Maybe this article from Wikipedia can help to basically inform you about the application setup and complications involved : Multi-monitor - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-monitor
-
Eric, I really dont have any questions as to your selection of equipment ... all Im doing is informing you to read and collect all specs available so you know well beforehand of what Resolutions the equipment supports to meet your selection uses and needs. I have no doubt that the Video Card and Monitor supports 1024x768 ... however its less likely the newer the LCD Monitor is its not going to have a 1024x768 optimal/native resolution. Things today are geared for higher native resolutions where in return you get the best performance. LCD screens (even TVs) perform their best at optimal/native settings. This optimal issue does not affect CRT screens. Here a little info to start with: Native resolution: Wikipedi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_resolution
-
Eric, The W7 default/generic video driver may support 1024x768 as you say. What you really need to find out is what Resolutions the Asus Video Card supports ( I assume your going to use the Asus drivers and not the generic W7 display drivers) and also what Resolutions the New Monitor supports. You also should find the Optimum Resolution of the Monitor so as to provide best/optimum performance in its overall resource usage. Go to the equipment makers and download their PDF spec sheets that have all the details.

Dave, As Peter has said ... this has popped up for discussion a few times in the past. This is the one of the earilest posts I found as it related to Run Slideshow when first introduced in v5.6 ... almost exactly a year ago. Input Filename before the Create MP4 Process
nobeefstu replied to goddi's topic in Suggestions for Next Versions
Gary, You make a valid proposal to improve the current operation of the MP4 Export/Convert function. Whenever there is a SaveAs dialog function added to any file saving operation ... saving/naming options become much more flexable and easier for the user to initiate any filename/filepath changes. The current MP4 Export form has only a saving to folder dialog selection ... and it only supports existing folders and does not create new folders or new filenames on the fly as they say. The only current work-around to perform a MP4 rename file ... you must first rename your current Project Name of the .pte file by using the File|SaveAs to create another project file. Currently ... PTE uses the projectname= and the ProjectFilePath= values as its naming directions to export a MP4 file. The current ini file does not save or write any filename values or parameters when saving a MP4 ... only the Preset selection type is saved. As you mention ... this is a topic of discussion for Ideas and Suggestions section. -
martinhickling, Your best alternative and currently available function is to use the Navigation Bar with the Print button in which to Save the current Slide or Image to a file for later review after judging. The saved images will open in a Image Program and not displayed in PTE. Set the Navaigation Bar settings to your needs. Make sure you have enabled the Allow To Restore Images in Project Options | Advanced tab. To avoid the Navigation Bar totally ... you must program each Slide/Image in O&A with a Action On Mouse Click with the command to Print. Its also possible to add a single Button object or invisible Frame object with the Print command and paste it to each slide to avoid setting the command for each indvidual slide. Getting any Program to reprogram itself at runtime is not a simple task.

Mike, PTE Object List does not support/have a drag item function. Right-Click the Object in the viewer display or the Object List and select Order in the menu ... then your options to move the order are available. Hopefully I understood your needs correctly. Otherwise read this post also. http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11327

However, you can speed things up if you want to create numerous new slides of the same slide or multiple sequences of particular slides . Use the keyboard <SHIFT> key function to select several slides to copy and then paste. Basically, 5 will get you 10 and 10 will get you 20 ... its all in the math.

I suspect its just some equipment is just not able to handle or convert the compressed Mpeg Audio format and requires the uncompressed LPCM Audio format. Even though using the Mpeg Audio format setting may save some overall DVD disc space ... the LPCM Audio format used by the general industry seems best to use to avoid these sound compatability issues. Another little tidbit of information that most users may not be aware of : For those already wanting to produce a single mixed sound file of all the music and sound files contained within their PTE Show ... use VideoBuilder to create just the MPEG2 File with the Audio Option of LPCM. All of your slideshow music content is saved as a single uncompressed wave file in PCM @ 48KHz as part of the end product. Just thought I pass on this little info that may benefit some users ... do with the sound file as you like.

Extremely vexing problem in PTE 6.0 and 6.02
nobeefstu replied to Ed Overstreet's topic in General Discussion
Peter, Please make the post in suggestions to start ( or revive) the excitement and interactivity on this subject. I have been trying to deduce if Igor's comment " - "Go to slide" will support slide names in addition to slide numbers" on the next version has any impact relating to our topic. If Igor is implemeting a addition of something like a Slides common names editing ... I would also fit this into the O&A Object List scheme of things. -
Don, Have you tried a DVD test using the VB-Project Options -Audio Format setting LPCM instead of Mpeg Audio to see if your sound playback issue is resolved ? I have heard some cases pumping the sound through some picky equipment types such as preamp and home theater can cause such sound issues.

Extremely vexing problem in PTE 6.0 and 6.02
nobeefstu replied to Ed Overstreet's topic in General Discussion
The most logical approach to address this function is to implement the adding of a image object to work exactly like the Mask container. This would make the object naming function conform to a standard. The adding of a Mask was a later added feature in the object development of PTE. PTE has offered here the best for both worlds... to show the container type ( which name is independently editable)and also displays any image changes used within the container. This will also benefit any future development if object grouping is implemented See the attachment -
Extremely vexing problem in PTE 6.0 and 6.02
nobeefstu replied to Ed Overstreet's topic in General Discussion
Ed and Tony There has been several discussion(s) and debate(s) of how PTE names its Objects as seen in the Object List. I suspect the issue(s) you are experiencing is that you when you the change the original image file to another image file ... the Object container tag name used initially to create the object should also change. This is not suppose to happen in PTE current design ... so its not really a bug or problem that needs to be fixed. The current process may need to be addressed with some additonal flexability or tweaking ... but currently its not a flaw or bug issue. The real issue is just basically understanding how PTE currently (and has always) treats its Objects naming as seen in the Objects List. Briefly, the Object names PTE uses are just editable tag names of the object container. PTE initially uses part of the image file name by defaualt to create the Obect container name to be displayed in the Object List. If you change/replace the original internal image file used in the object container ... only the image file name has changed and does not reflect changes used in the object container name. Some users normally expect the Object container name used within the Object List to change whenever there is a new change or replacement of the image file name used. You currently have two options to address this naming issue 1- You have to manually Edit the current Object container tag name to whatever your workflow needs ( Image1 or the ne w filename) 2-Delete the current Object (this removes the object container tag name) and then create a new Object of your new image file in which the Object container tag name to reflect. As I said, there has been lots of debate of how this Object naming should work or expectected to work. However, there is different work flow and habits for each user and one size does not fit all. But the bottom line is ... the Object List does not reflect changes in its original container tag name whenever a image file name is replaced. I will see if I can find the old topics of this discussion. -
Andrew, What was the actual compiled size result ? Its hard to know what may have happened since you say you were playing with the settings on this project file ... try a brand new project with just that same image (dont play with settings) and Save the .pte file first and check the projected file output size in the staus bar. The actual compiled file size is also higher @ some 50kb or so ... I suspect this is due to the new v6 icon file used and/or the new UPX packer process PTE is now using.

Laszlo, Im a little unclear on some of your details. Are you saying you removed the quotation marks ? The quotation marks are a requirement esp when using on some other PCs when filename is long or contains spaces. Some PCs may interpret the filestring differently ... the quotation marks are basically instructions to identify properly. My PC will work without quotation marks as long as the file names and paths contain no spaces and are short and simple. Otherwise I need to use the quotation marks. Also when sharing files among various other unknown users file and drive formats (Fat, Fat32, NTFS) ... its always best to keep your filenames and foldernames as short as possible with no spaces used in its entire path/filestring naming. Just because it works on your PC ... it does not guarantee it will work someplace else when written to a differntly formated drive/disc. Keeping naming principles as short and simple is the only universal remedy. Post your entire filestring information as entered in the PTE file. As long as the other users PCs have a PDF Reader we will sort this out.

Dan, Following Brian's post above may be your last hope ... but I think its best to first find out some real informaton and details of this problem .pte file and its contents. Lets see if some other users will also experience issues with this same file ... esp those with 128mb cards. Uploading a complete backup zip (has all the file contents) of this PTE project is best for others to verify and test. Many users use MediaFire site for this purpose. Its also possible to condense the problem slideshow by removing several slides and just saving (save as) the file again with just the known slides that you mostly have issues with so you dont have to reveal or upload the full project backup zip. If you dont want to upload a complete backup zip with contents ... at least add as an attachment to your forum post a copy of this problem .pte file only for review. Make sure to include some image information about the overall photos used ... pixel size and file size(kb/mb). Especially the photo information on your large pan slides. You may also want to try the PTE Project Reporter v2 utility program which will easily make a text project report of the problem .pte file which will give us all basic information and details of your pte settings used and its relative image/music properties. Just Save Report List text file and attach the file to your post. *See the Pte Project Reporter v2 link in my signature bar located at the very bottom of this post. Final Note: On WnSoft site there is a PteShow_sources.zip available for download. Test this package on your PC and see if all tests well. Try especially Slide 6 as it contains a large pan scene. See http://www.wnsoft.com/apr/slideshows.htm and select the Sources link in the Examples.

APLman, Ive noticed you are still using PTE v6.0 ... since your .pte test files are produced in PteVersion=6.00 Its best to test your issue using the latest PTE release available. Install the latest PicturesToExe Version 6.0.2 (January 19, 2010) available here: http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10889&view=findpost&p=70616 or http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10889&view=findpost&p=73134 I cannot say your issue will be resolved in using v6.02 ... but it does have the latest available fixes to date as compared to v6.0. Any users having issues with PTE should always test with the latest release possible.
