Igor, That's good news for both you and us. For you, because it means you are not faced with a significant rewrite of PTE and for us, because we can decide when we move to Windows 8 in the sure knowledge that our favourite slideshow software will work OK. regards, Peter

Igor, I have just finished the following test: - Uninstalled v7 using the PTE Uninstaller: this left me with only v4.49 installed - Installed v6.5.7 from a previously downloaded zip file (dated 12/03/2011 08:09): this PTE version loaded older PTE files successfully and warned me when I offered it a PTE project file that was created with v7 - Downloaded and installed v7 from the Forum link (presumably getting your modified version): double-clicked on an old PTE project file and it loaded into v7 successfully. Offered v7 the same v7 file I had offered to v6.5.7 - and now that also opened successfully. Everything seems to behave as I would have expected it to. I think you have solved the problem Igor. Well done, my friend! regards, Peter

Mike, You can drag from the File List (the panel of thumbnails in the main PTE window) straight into the Timeline, you know! regards, Peter

Ron, I've never seen the screen that you provided as a screengrab. I always just take the High Quality preset options. regards, Peter

From the Full Screen slide list display there is no way of telling PTE where to drop the selected images. You can, however, make your selection (click, Ctrl+click, Shift+click, etc), copy those images (ctrl+C) and then switch to the Slide List, select the slide that you want to drop them before and Paste the images (Ctrl+V). regards, Peter

Dave/Igor, That is also what I did. When I installed v6.5 I allowed it to set file associations. When I installed each beta of v7 I told it not to make the file associations. When I installed the v7 official release I allowed it to make the file associations. When I then double-clicked on a PTE project file in Windows Explorer, it always opened it in v6.5. I had to uninstall v6.5 to get the association with v7 to become active. I've never before had to uninstall a previous version to get the latest version's file associations active. But I've never installed two versions, both with file associations set, on a Windows 7 system before, either. It could be a Windows 7 "feature". (System is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with SP1) regards, Peter

I've just downloaded and installed v7 final release using the link on the forum. The download and install seemed to work OK. But I now find that, despite having the two boxes ticked for the file associations, my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit system still has the file associations pointing to PTE v6.5. If I double-click on a PTE project file, v6.5 gets launched and not v7. As far as I can recall, all previous versions of PTE have replaced the file association. v7 seems to have either ignored the associations or else it must have added another pair of associations. Any thoughts any one? regards, Peter

Ken, I'm afraid that, at present, I disagree with your suggestion. The transitions (or effects) at each side of a slide are, in a well-designed and well-built sequence, chosen to work in conjunction with the adjacent images. If you choose to move the slide, the adjacent images will now be different and, consequently, the choice of transition (effect) and its duration may (probably will) need to be amended. I fail to see any value in carrying the old transitions along with the slide. And, in any case, setting a different transition is not exactly time-consuming. Could it be, perhaps, that you are trying to "polish" your show too early in the workflow? Setting transition types and durations is one of the last things I do when building a sequence. The bulk of the build is done using simple fade in/out set at 1.5 seconds. Only when I feel reasonably happy with the order of the images and the basic synchronisation to the music or voice-over do I set about refining the transitions. regards, Peter

If by Frame you mean an object that forms the frame, then you can select everything except the Frame object by doing that in the O&A window using Ctrl+click to select each of the other objects, by name, into a collection. Once they are selected you can then do Copy and Paste actions. Or you can Copy and Paste the entire Slide and then use the O&A window to remove the Frame object. regards Peter

Ken, I assume you have the following: Slide A Slide B carrying a video clip Slide C and you want the transition of Slide A to Slide B to complete before the video clip on Slide B starts running. Simply add a second copy of Slide B in front of your existing one - but without the video clip. Transition to this copy of Slide B and then use a "Quick" to transition to the second copy, the one that has the video. The transition from Slide B to Slide C you can control by having that copy of Slide B run longer than the video so that the video isn't obscured by the onward transition. PTE can do pretty much whatever you want it to do. It's just that sometimes, our thinking isn't "out of the box" enough to allow us to find the solution. regards, Peter

Dave, The image that goes to Elements needs only to be placed in the layer stack between its preceeding and succeeding images and adjusted to provide the best "third image". It doesn't usually get any other manipulation. All that happens is that the cropped/re-composed image is Saved As the final JPEG (level=8) for the sequence. regards, Peter

Running External Application - IS THIS A BUG IGOR?

John, Are all your sequences in the same folder? Or have you moved or renamed something somewhere? Peter -
My version of Lightroom doesn't use these absolute values for the JPEG quality. It uses a slider to control "Quality" as a percentage value. Because of the way I work in my end-to-end workflow, I always set the Lightroom export value to 100%. The final Save As in Photoshop Elements is always at level 8. I've never felt dissatisfied with the end results. regards, Peter

Barry, I don't use HDMI connections myself but I do know that the HDMI cable carries both sound and picture. regards, Peter

I'm with Barry on this one. I still don't understand the purpose of this option. Why would I want to change the setting of this feature? or... Why would it be a bad move to change the setting of this feature? Once I understand the "why" we can move on and talk about the "what". And like Barry, I would prefer the answers to be written without the use of "techno speak". regards, Peter

How do I add a png frame to all images in a slide show
fh1805 replied to Ronniebootwest's topic in General Discussion
Ron, You have to do it manually, but once you get the first two or three slides done, you develop a "keystroke rhythm" and it becomes quite easy to work through the show. regards, Peter -
Dick, I confirm Barry's findings (715 a rhythmic flicker every second or so; 658 steady as a rock). I ran the tests on Win7 64bit, nVidia GeForce 210, quad core Intel i3 @3.1GHz, 4GB RAM. regards, Peter

Is the exe file actually in the root directory of the CD or in a sub-folder? The autorun points to the root directory. Peter

Sure, just set the opacity values as you want them on a pair of keyframes. You can use the start and end keyframes of the motion or introduce extra keyframes just for opacity control. Its all there on the Animation tab. regards, Peter

Whilst I can accept the benefit for some users, to my mind the use of PTE to do this will result in unnecessarily large image files being used. We know the consequence of that: the potential for a sequence not to run smoothly on a system other than the one it was created on. regards, Peter
-
Dave, I don't recall it being raised before. My own method is to build my images within Photoshop as Layers. Using the Move tool I can adjust both the size and the position of each image relative to the previous and next. Changing the opacity allows me to assess not just the third image but the transition all the way through. Sure, its time consuming, but that is what is required in order to achieve something more than just images changing one after the other. Unfortunately, with my preference for subjects of a historical nature, I often am using old images and so don't have as much freedom to change the composition as I do with my own images. regards, Peter

Any issues with upgrade from PTE 6.0.4?
fh1805 replied to mountain man's topic in General Discussion
Hi Mountainman, The only point you need to bear in mind is that, once you have opened and saved an old PTE project in a newer version of PTE, you will not be able to open it using the older version. Each new version of PTE adds new features (which require new commands in the project file) once these new commands have been added (at default values if you haven't made use of that feature) they cannot be removed by PTE. They become lines of code which the older version does not recognise; it does not know what to do with them. I have found PTE to be forward compatible all the way from v4.43 through to v7.0 beta 14. Have fun! Peter -

Gary, Therefore I suggest the [VB] one is from your purchase; and the two-key one is from Support (taking a "sledgehammer to crack a nut" approach and sending you both keys). regards, Peter
-
Gary, I would say that the first one is clearly for VideoBuilder by virtue of "[VB]" whereas the second one is as if you had bought the product in full. Are you sure you paid only for an upgrade and not for a full product licence? Remember, your PTE base product is licenced "for life"; you need that key only the once, to activate the code after purchase. VideoBuilder keys, as you know, expire after two years. You have to renew the licence every two years if you want to keep the product up with current release levels. regards, Peter
