I had the same skipping problems with v4.x on a 1.2 GHz machine, 512 meg ram, running Win XP. After resizing all my photos, trying various formats of sound and scrapping a pile of CDs, I reloaded v3.8. Guess what? Problem went away. There is something wrong with v4.x.
