quietstorm
With all new versions of windows and the computers of today, it will use more resources! Look at it this way.. take a computer 5 years ago.. it needed a few resources like a moderate hard drive,CD drive, graphics card, memory, etc. Today..the computers has to have it because of multimedia, TV cards, massivehard drives and memory, accelerated graphics, etc.Computers today will again be extinct in a matter of months! This is my two cents..this may or may not reflect the outcome of this discussion!BartI asked a question on MS web site whether it uses more resources than Vista, they didn't reply!!!!!!!Yachtsman1

srw
endevil,Could you please provide me more information on this issue? - PicturesToExe Deluxe 5.7 didn't work under Windows 7 on your PC without setting a compatibility option (Windows XP SP3)?- What video card do you have installed?- Did you install newest video drivers through Windows Update? Thanks in advance!Maybe this topic should be merged with Carol Steeles "PTE and Windows 7" or deleted.Though the difference here is before my dillema,i managed to create an executable which runs instantly whilst alas, poor PTE, does not. - PicturesToExe Deluxe 5.7 or 5.6 didn't work under Windows 7 on your PC without setting a compatibility option (Windows XP SP3)?OK, it was a gradual decline...Initially all seemed good, then "Program not responding" Locking occured.Thats when i used the Compatability option....SP2- SP3- xp, with a good response. Now the program starts and is non responsive to any Compatability option.Program only responds to an initial startup.Thats it.Currently using AV - "BullGuard Internet Security 8.5".YES... I did put PTE in after Bullguard.- What video card do you have installed?GeForce 9400 GT -1024 MB.- Did you install newest video drivers through Windows Update?Yes- amongst other things. Well, I seem to have the reverse problem to Carol Steeles, might try using "Avira" AV. UPD8 1- to above ---------------------------------------------------------------Fresh install W7... No Antivirus program . No initial system update. Had to Use Compatability again (PTE 5.6 - 5.7.2) to run without locking - XP sp2 mode. Its been running since. Creating executables fine.Running full update next.---------------------------------------------------------------

Carol Steele
Wow Carol , thats one can of whoop ass!.............................Yes , I guess soI build a new system every 2½ to 3 years - although I was a bit annoyed this time round as just after a week of purchasing all the bits, Intel released their DO version of the i7 920 chip, which is far easier to overclock and runs much cooler than the S0/S1 variant. I can get a reasonable and stable overclock to around 3.36GHz with this chip, but the D0's are easily overclocked on just air to around 3.8 to 4GHz. Guess I'll wait a year and then do an upgrade as prices should have dropped a lot by then.I do a lot of Photoshop work and I create a lot of HD slideshows in both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats and I have found that with this system I can render an HD show in one quarter of the time it used to take on my old Intel Core Duo E6667(?) chipped system which I built 2½ years ago. Things have definitely got cheaper though - I paid over £300 for 4Gb of RAM back then and this time round I paid around £100 for 12Gb of much faster RAM. Trouble is that the price of motherboards (at least 1366 mobos) has gone through the roof for reasonably high end ones and the cpu's aren't exactly bargain basement prices yet
Guest Yachtsman1
As an XP user, I have been watching the hype surrounding Windows 7, having fought off the Vista era. Eventually I will have to up-grade my system (Samsung G15 laptop), with a Sony Viao laptop as back-up. I am now in my 70th year and accepting change comes with difficulty. I read today that Windows 7 can be set to operate as XP SP3??? which raised a chuckle. The amount of money I can spend grows ever less as inflation continues to bite.I am now considering building my own PC, which as it needs to be portable would have to be a cube type case. I have priced various sets of components at differing specs and believe my maximum spend to be in the region of £800, excluding monitor. The following list of components falls within my budget, what do the advanced users think???Computer Case ThermalTake Lanbox VF1000BWS CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 (4 x 2.66 GHZ) 1333FSB - 6 MB Motherboard ASUS P5Q-VM S/V/L M-ATX 1333FSB (Intel G45) Memory Corsair XMS2 4GB PC2-8500 1066 MHZ (2 x 2 GB) - Lifetime Warranty (DDR2) Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT - 1 GB - VGA/DVI/HDMI (Palit) - OverClocked Power Supply OCZ 600W Stealth XStream - Low Noise (Free 6 FT Extension Cable) Hard Drive 1 1 TB (1000 GB) SATA-II HDD UDMA 300 7200 32MB Optical Drive 1 ASUS (DRW-2014L1T) DVD /- RW 22x - Black - Lightscribe (SATA) Sound Card Creative Audigy SE 7.1 (PCI) Networking Edimax Wireless LAN 54Mbps (PCI) USB Ports 4 X USB 2.0 Ports CPU Heatsink Speeze QuadroFlow VIII - Low Noise Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 32-BIT (Genuine CD & COA Included)(option for Windows 7 after release.
