Using 5.7 beta2, I opened a show that was created in 5.6. I saved it and created an exe while in 5.7 beta2. I went back to 5.6 and tried to work on it but got the following error message:

"Cannot open this file. This file is damaged, or it was created with newer version of PTE (maybe v1.00 - 1.60)."

Am I now not able to work with this show anymore in 5.6????????????

open the 5.6 program

open the original pte with 5.6 - not the pte made with 5.7

this has been covered many times since ver 5 was issued -- use the search function of forum

Gary,

It depends of what you made with this project in v5.7...

If you used the new features, I'm afraid you can't.

There is an ascendant compatibility but not descendant.

If you only saved your project started with v5.6 but didn't make anything special with v5.7, you can try the following procedure :

- open your pte project with a text editor (Notepad by example)

- replace the first six lines with the following (I guess you use v5.6.4 of PTE)

[main]

filetype=Project file of PicturesToExe

CreationTool=PicturesToExe Deluxe 5.64

PteVersion=5.64

globalversion=1

minorversion=13

UPDATE : Ken, when I finished my message, I noticed you already posted an answer.

You have to know that this procedure doesn't work. You wil get the message :

Cannot open this file. This file is damaged, or it was created with newer version of PTE (maybe v1.00 - 1.60)

Ken...That's the problem. When I saved the slideshow in 5.7, I saved it over the file made with 5.6. So now 5.6 will not open the slideshow. I never saw any warning that 5.7 would corrupt the file so it would not work in earlier versions.

Thedom... I did not do anything but saved it. I'll give your idea a try. Thanks..

Gary

ADDED LATER: Whoopee, it worked. Thanks thedom....

always "save as" the pte with a different name

messing withe the pte if you dont know what you are doing is like messing with computer registry when you do not save it with a date so you can reuse it if necessary

Ken, Just so I am clear about this issue, let me ask this question. In the past, I don't believe that I had problems using a beta created pte file in an earlier version. I understand that new menu items or changed menu items of a new version would not function in the earlier versions. But for the entire PTE to get corrupted so it does not work in the previous version, I think, is something new to me. Is this something that Igor just did not attend to yet? I am surprised that no one else seems to have run into this situation. Easy to fix but then you don't want to fiddle around with the beta much when you are actually working on a final slideshow.

well for one thing the this beta is different than 5.6 and no Igor did not omit "Is this something that Igor just did not attend to yet?"

but,

i have even made the mistake of opening with a new version,saving the pte with a new version and then trying to open the show with a 4~ version and getting the message

"Cannot open this file. This file is damaged, or it was created with newer version of PTE (maybe v1.00 - 1.60)"

and numerous other people have done the same thing

as i said in my first post use the search of the forum
