baldsparky Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 HiI'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, my apologies if not.I was just wondering if the problems that have been mentioned over the years on this forum associated with running Pictures to Exe and ATI video cards still exist, ie colour shifts etc.The reason I am asking is that my old laptop is on it's last legs and I might need to purchase another and I didn't want to get one with an ATI card if there were still problems.Having had a quick look there seems to be more laptops available with ATI cards fitted than Nvidia.I would appreciate any help and advice that you could give me in this area. Many thanksKind regardsPaul Quote
davegee Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 I will be in the same boat when, at some stage, I will need to upgrade to a new desktop with W7 etc.I have always had nVidia with 512Mb memory and would be loath to have to make the change.Watching with interest.DG Quote

Guest Yachtsman1 Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 I went through this rigmarol earlier this year. I came to the decision that a laptop would not do what I wanted & unless I paid megga money would not get what I wanted. So I went desktop portable based on a cube style box that I could lug around if necessary, to date I haven't had to. The graphics card I chose is depicted below.Yachtsman1 Quote
baldsparky Posted October 28, 2010 Author Report Posted October 28, 2010 Hithanks for the answers and thanks to Ken for putting this post in the right place.I'm not sure that I have made myself clear in my first post or that I am even making myself clear in this one!I seem to remember that for a long time there has been some compatibility problems with Pictures to Exe and ATI video cards, not necessarily with their ability to run the shows (transitions etc) but specifically that there was a noticeable colour shift from the original photographs when they were run in the show.I was just wondering whether this was still the case.Kind regardsPaul Quote
fh1805 Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Paul,I think you are recalling discussions that took place some 3 or more years ago about some ATi cards not supporting colour management profiles properly. I recall that Igor took this matter up with ATi support but they took the view that the cards involved were older ones and that there was no business case for upgrading their driver software.I bought an Acer laptop some 3-4 years ago and have had no problems with it. It uses ATi graphics. The only comment I have about it is that on its own monitor screen the colours look a little off (a greenish-yellow cast to them) in comparison to the monitor on my desktop system (nVidia 8400GS). But when projected from the laptop through my Dell digital projector they look fine.None of my equipment has been colour-profiled but everything (camera, computer, projector) is set to use sRGB.regards,Peter Quote
baldsparky Posted October 30, 2010 Author Report Posted October 30, 2010 Thanks for the reply Peter. So would I be right in thinking that there should be no problem with the up to date ATI video cards with regards to colour shift and or management?thanksPaul Quote
fh1805 Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Paul,That I cannot answer. I can speak only for my own, very limited experience of ATi graphics. My laptop works fine with my digital projector. If you have concerns then you need to arrange a "try before you buy" - and that might mean using a local specialist rather than one of the big Internet or Retail Park players. That's likely to put the cost up a little.regards,Peter Quote
Guest Yachtsman1 Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 Found my original thread when deciding how to up-grade my computer. See http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11339&st=0&p=73099&fromsearch=1entry73099Yachtsman1 Quote
baldsparky Posted October 31, 2010 Author Report Posted October 31, 2010 Thanks very much for the replies.I took a few pte shows on a memory stick and tried them on various laptops with ATI cards and there didn't seem to be any noticeable colour shift, certainly not enough to worry about anyway, and the good lady was more than happy, and as we all know that's all that really matters. Thanks again for all your help, much appreciated Paul Quote
