Guest Yachtsman1 Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 After a dull start this morning, the sun finally broke through. So we loaded the car & drove to the Botanic Gardens 1/4 mile away. This was our first visit so we wandered around snapping anything & everything. My picture tally, 55 Margaret's 104. I kept 30 odd of mine & these are in this show. This was a first field test of the new camera Canon SX30 IS.Mechanics. 15.5MB Mediafire download, 35 slides, 3.46 minutes, aspect ratio 5-4 slide, size fixed. The first music track is a bit ropey, an original recording from Walter Houston from the 40's, I'd paid for it from Amazon so felt I had to use it. Bit of animation, couple of Hitchcock moments. Nothing more to say, other than I may develope it further when I get more material.Yachtsman1.http://www.mediafire.com/?5jysa39cvrqb1 Quote

David Porter Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Hi Eric,Great colours, sharpness and vibrancy from your SX30IS, you must be well pleased with it. The tempo of the show blends very well with the music and I like the first piece of music. I'm not so sure about the 4 x 3 format although I know it is very difficult to compose photos in a format other than what the camera gives you, that's why most of my shows are in 15:10. Is there Grid you can use for different formats? I look forward to seeing the results of you next visit. Quote
Guest Yachtsman1 Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Thanks Mick. First impressions with the camera are good picture quality, but handling will take some getting used to. Being smaller than my previous D5000, the controls are much closer & it's easy to press things you didn't mean to. However I'm sure the D5000 memory will fade the more I use the SX30 IS.Re the 5-4 format, as I have stated many times before I'm not an advocate of widescreen and have a 5-4 monitor & a 4-3 projector for public shows, so I will be sticking to 5-4 for the forseeable future, the emoticon says it all for me. The music was an old time favourite (September Song) & a track which seemed to fit the bill from my archives used previously in one of my epics. Regards EricYachtsman1.PS Just about to check Margaret's efforts, but again she is a little rusty after a long lay-off. Quote
Ken Cox Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Mickguess we cant swing him unless he wins the lottery ken Quote
Guest Yachtsman1 Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Ken, I can assure you it isn't financial. I have a Sony 16-9 LT bought in 2005 before I'd ever heard of PTE & aspect ratios. I prefer 5-4, looking through a letter box has no appeal, unfortunately I have to tolerate it on my TV. Incidentally, watched a film on TV last week filmed in cinemascope which was letterboxed even more by black bars top & bottom. Last night we watched Hope & Crosby in Road to Rio, recorded earlier this year. The opening sequences were corectly formatted, the they stretched it & switched to widescreen & everyone gained 5 stone in weight, tragic. Regards EricYachtsman1 Quote
David Porter Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 Hi Eric,Yes, personal taste is a major factor but surely the content of your show would also influence the format as well as the camera used. Your wife's D40 would be 15:10 so why not compose in this especially with the Botanic Garden or holiday landscapes and try presenting the show in this. If you are putting it on this Forum then it would make sense to take into account other peoples views on format and mostly a wider format is preferred by most for many shows. This is probably the reason you can't buy 5:4 TVs Quote
Guest Yachtsman1 Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 Hi MickI've spoken on this subject many times in the past, to me widescreen is a throwback to cinemascope which TV producers have followed to allow films to be shown easily. I'm afraid you're flogging a dead horse trying to persuade me.Incidentally, while analysing my pictures against M's I realised I hadn't switched off the IS (image stabilisation) or VR (vibration reduction)on the Nikon, when using the tripod, which was about 50% of my shots. It used to be easy on my old Nikon, just a flick of the switch on the lens. The Canon needs a search through the menu then an option of 3 actions. Suppose that's progress, (another word for cost cutting.) Something else to remember.Regards EricYachtsman1 Quote
