Hi everyone in this forum.

I am preparing a Christmas slideshow to send out to my family and I face the common issue of fonts inconsistency while playing the show on different PC's.

I have been reading several old posts on this issue and that is why I have used the nice utility from Boxig (font installer) but it gives me a couple of issues:

- The first time the show is run, the font is installed but the PC (XP, 1.4G processor) does not recognise it till I reboot.

- once the font is installed (file present int the /windows/fonts folder), the second time the show runs I have the error "Can't copy ..." path and font name. If the font is not present, the error does not come up.

The other option of creating all the slides with Photoshop (or any external editor) is simply not flexible enough when manipulating many slides.

Anybody has a better practice than the above?

Are we ever going to have the fonts embadded into the .exe?

Many thanks,

Astro Filante

Hi, Astro,

Welcome to the Forum!

As you noticed, the font problem has been around since day one, and will likely be with us for a while longer.

It's best to restrict your use in the Object Editor to the more common fonts, and add any of the fancier less-common ones in your image editor.

Astro,

I find it best to package any program and content required using an Installer/Builder program.

There are many avail for free that may have all the features you need ... or you can buy one that has alot more features.

I use Paquet Builder ... but its for a cost .

I believe Inno Setup may have what you need and may be still free :

http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php

It may take a little extra work ... but it solves all those problems and is totally professional looking. Software developers need to use them all the time B)

* Package it all together ... your PTE Show and whatever parts you require. It will install the font, play the show, and remove it if necessary ... all in one sweep.

New Note :

- The first time the show is run, the font is installed but the PC (XP, 1.4G processor) does not recognise it till I reboot.

I imagine this can possibly happen when the name of the Font File does not actually match its actual Typeface name. Alot of fonts use shortfile naming but your Os uses the actual Typeface name ... so it may need to reboot to recognise the Typeface name. See if your Fontname.ttf matches it actual Typeface name ... if not rename it so it does match the Typeface name.

Theres even a free font tool "TrueType Renamer" that does this all for you.

Astro,

Thank you for finding a bug in this utility.

I fixed it and uploaded a new version.

You will not see this message again.

Hi and thanks you all for the quick reply!

It looks that there is no an easy answer to the problem.

Thanks Al for your suggestion but the classic fonts are somewhat limiting.

And thanks Nobeefstu for your advise.

Nevertheless I'l like to focus on the artistic part rather than the technical one (I already do tech stuff all day long).

That is why I'd like to do without other software or builders.

Already I need an external software to visually sort the pictures...

As per the font yupe name, I am chacking it now.

For the Admin: is the embadding fonts feature somewhere in the roadmap?

Boxig, thanks for your software. I get the new version right now.

Last but not least, I am wondering if this is a common issue to other slides show softwares or not.

I may be wrong in this, but i believe the same fancy font that you use in a word.doc, email message etc must also be on the receiving system.

p2e shows that are made with Lucinda Handwriting for example, do not display on a system that does not have Lucinda Handwriting, the system font is displayed.

but once a p2e show is converted to a vcd for example and burned to a cd the font stays with the finished vcd show.

Ken,

You are correct. All types of documents ... htm included

If the Users Pc does not have your intended font ... the OS usually resorts to the default font type. And of course VCD (as you mention) is something thats not affected.

Most users do as Al suggests ... and keep them basic install types ...and for unusuall/ fancy types use the image program.

Alot of Fonts are protected material ... just like music. No sense creating issues by illegal distribution. Some programs embed Fonts just for temp use ... something Astro wants PTE capable of. (* Embedding still does not allow use of protected material even if its for temp use.).

And that's why we have so many fonts nearly identical in design. Developers who don't want to pay royalties, or who cannot avail themselves of a particular font will often design their own similar font.

Boxig, your new version of the font Installer works fine now. Thanks.

About the copyright or protected fonts, I am not sure if this does apply when these slides shows are for personal use.
