It would be useful to have an After Effects-like panel showing the layers in a slideshow, that could be turned on or off as required. As in AE, each layer could show it's timeline position.

If I understand you correctly, you would like to be able to change the layers via keyframes? In other words rather than a layer remaining as it is for the entire duration of the slide, you would like to be able to change the layer position of an object within the slide via a keyframe? Of course presently the layer position is fully adjustable in the Objects and Animations screen, but is fixed for the duration of that slide. To effectively change the layer position the slide would now require duplication.

Best regards,

Yes, effectively each layer would have a keyframe on the Timeline. By clicking on the "Show Layers On Timeline" button you would go to an expanded Timeline view with each layer having a "sub-timeline" below the original Timeline slide position. As I understand it, in the above example you only see the original image on the Timeline and not any layers applied in the Objects and Animation screen. So if each layer had a keyframe and sub-timeline, you could graphically see (and manipulate) when a mask comes in, when another slide or video layer begins or ends, etc.
