How fast can conversion be done?

Hi:

I have been wishing to put the PTE slideshow to DVD, but in my workflow, I only have minutes to get one ready. I have been using PTE for a PC version, and a different software to make a SVCD for a DVD player. The SVCD takes about 8 minutes for 150 pictures.

Can any of you tell me that you can make a DVD in 8 minutes or less anf what software you use?

Dennis, I held off my answer, thinking you would have received a better answer by now. If I assume you want 6 seconds viewing per slide, your 150 photos result in a PTE show of 15 minutes. My experience, on slow (750mhz) pc with DVD burner, is it takes much, that is much longer than 8 minutes for me to make a DVD of the PTE show. I'm sorry I don't have documented times to give you. Ken documents well many of his efforts and may be able to come up with some actual times that might be helpful to you.

Dennis welcome to the forum

dvd's do not get made fast

my latest notes - -tho not a p2e it might enlighten you as to time

for reference only

i decided to try to capture a vhs show with my ati all in wonder 9000 card

tape was 57 mins 30 secs

used windvd platinum 6 to do the capture

nero 6 suite for the burn -- background's are nicer and quicker to make multiple copies -- roughly 1/2 the time of original encoding/burn -- it keeps the encoded file in memory i think

created a mpeg file 3,807,724 kb

resulting dvd was just over 4 gig

first one i did i had a whole lot of background noise -- tv - normal fan noise, moving chair etc

2nd run i turned off microphone and the pc camera defaults -- camera was culprit but ramped down slider on my headset/mike input to CMA:)-- box was already checked to mute

i could have raised the audio recording level [was at 50%] on the ati theatre suite but decided against

final was a keeper

time consumed 4+ hrs -- 1 dud and one keeper

the tape was one i had recorded in composite video [ i do not have svhs] from a widescreen dvd so i had some minor border top and bottom not enough to worry about

and this was my first dvd burn notes

Fri 7/2/2004 9:41 PM

my first attempt at making a dvd direct from the p2e program notes

meant as an fyi for expected time to burn vs file size

included a screenshot of the files but the old dummie cut off the time they run

DVD TEST NOTES

8:26 PM 7/2/2004

USED WINDVD SUITE -- CAME WITH ASUS MOTHERBOARD

USED P2E EXISTING SHOWS -- I HAD MADE THESE SHOWS TO VCD AND SVCD FORMAT MANY TIMES AND I KNEW THEIR FAILINGS

REVISED AS NECESSARY - IMAGEs TO FULL SCREEN settings -- 95% SCREENSIZE -- SOME WERE MADE ORIGINALLY with ver 3.6 --WERE SCANNED INTO SYSTEM FROM 4X6 PRINTS, 8X10 XEROX COPIES AND 8X10 PRINTS ETC

I DID NOT ADJ THE TEXT POSITON FOR THE PICT ID SO IN SOME CASES I LOST THE TEXT AND IN OTHER CASE'S IT IS LOST IN THE PICTURE - -I WAS NOT ABOUT TO REINVENT THE WHEEL AS I WANTED TO SEE THE OUTPUT QUALITY and how the system would operate

USED P2E VER 4.3 BETA 1 AND CREATED VIDEO --default settings - INTERLACE AND SHARPNESS FILTER ON

AUTO SHOW EXE = 24.484MB - AVI 123.311 MB

AIR SHOW EXE = 9.65 MB- AVI = 73.141

CALENDAR EXE = 21.25 MB - AVI = 107.394

BRIDGE EXE = 14.5= MB - 116.500 MB

KIDS EXE =4.79 MB - AVI =23.364 MB

MOUNTAINS EXE = 11.579 MB - AVI 91.750 MB

TUGBOAT EXE = 6.106 MB AVI - 25.827 MB

TOUR EXE 3.812 MB - AVI =25.827 MB

THE ESTIMATE TOTAL FILE DVD SIZE WAS +- 3600 MB'S

TIME FOR WINDVD TO CONVERT AND BURN WAS + - 2HRS 10 MINS

SO I DONT BELIEVE I WILL BE GOING THRU THE TMPGENC GYRATIONS -- THE NEW SYSTEM IS WORKING REAL WELL FOR THIS OPERATION

VIEWED ON 13", 23", 29" AND 32" STANDARD TV'S -- THE PICTURES OF THE MOUNTAINS THAT WERE SCANNED FROM MY HASSLEBLAD DAYS ARE EXCEPTIONAL

THE OVER ALL QUALITY IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THIS OLD BOY :)

NOW I HAVE TO FIGGER OUT THE FANCY MENU SETTINGS IN WINDVD

excuse the capitals:))

1 GIG SWAP FILE ON E DRIVE

since these notes were made i have updated to xp home sp2

the more hp you have the quicker the encoding process and my dvd burner is only a 4x so if you have real deep pockets buy a big and fast system

prices are coming down and speeds are going up

a comparison between my 2 systems

with the old system

pent 111 1.3 gig hz 1 gig ram, 1 gig swap file

when burning a cd-r disk the cpu processor performance graph was pegged at 100%

this systenm

pent 4 2.8 ghz 1 gig ram i gig swap file

cpu processor performance graph was at 80%

and i was transferring files via the internet at the same time

Thanks Ken & LumenLux for your replies. It seems that getting ready to burn DVD takes a lot of time. The actual burn is very fast, but the computer really is put to work to prepare to write a DVD witha slideshow. I am hoping that someday this will speed up. But, thanks again for your replies. :)
