rosy Posted March 19, 2021 Report Posted March 19, 2021 Hi Has anyone used this for screen capture, it's supposed to be free? OBS Screen Capture software. Rosy. Quote
Igor Posted March 19, 2021 Report Posted March 19, 2021 NVIDIA Geforce Experience free app captures screen video with a full screen resolution at 60 frames per second in real time. This app requires a desktop PC with NVIDIA Geforce 1050 graphics or higher. I used this app to record this screen video: https://www.youtube.com/embed/sjbwbK8Yjds?rel=0&autoplay=1 Quote

davegee Posted March 19, 2021 Report Posted March 19, 2021 You have to have the GeForce Experience installed. DG Quote
rosy Posted March 19, 2021 Author Report Posted March 19, 2021 Thanks Dave, first time I've tried it so it's a bit daunting. I had GFE installed but never tried it, thought it was just to play games Thanks for the heads up. Rosy. Quote
tom95521 Posted March 20, 2021 Report Posted March 20, 2021 For Windows 10 I have used OBS, Bandicam/Bandicut, GeForce, Mirillis Action!, Xbox Game Bar, Techsmith Camtasia/Snagit, FastStone Capture, Wondershare Filmora 10, VideoProc, and Screenbits. For a long time I was a big fan of Bandicam but currently Screenbits ( $7 on Microsoft Store/$8 Steam) is my favorite. Simple and lightweight. https://www.screenbits.com/ For the Mac (also works on Windows) I really like free version of Loom for internet facing videos since it's free for short 5 minute videos and easy to share. I also have videoproc and Filmora 10 for the Mac that can screen record but you have to be careful to capture the audio correctly. https://www.loom.com/screen-recorder For cutting/splitting/joining video I think Bandicut is really good. https://www.bandicam.com/bandicut-video-cutter/ And for Windows screen image capture I have always liked FastStone Capture. The screen recorder function is limited to 30 fps wmv format but the image capture and editor is great. https://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm There are dozens of other screen recorders like TinyTake I have not tried. rosy Posted March 20, 2021 Author Report Posted March 20, 2021 Hi Tom I tried GFE but having previously used Camtasia didn't find it user friendly. So I downloaded OBS which looked very similar to Camtasia without the bells & whistles. However, when I tried it I fell at the first fence & couldn't record a YT video. Had my 2nd Pfizer jab last Tuesday, maybe it's slowed my brain? I'll have another try tomorrow. BTW my Camtasia ran out a few years ago & I didn't fancy paying for an up-grade as I didn't use it that much. Regards Rosy. Quote
Barry Beckham Posted March 20, 2021 Report Posted March 20, 2021 Tom. How can you use 10 different screen recorders to a sufficient level to then be able to accurately assess them against each other? It would take me an age to do that. Quote
tom95521 Posted March 20, 2021 Report Posted March 20, 2021 Rosy, Still waiting for my first jab. Like you I have an older version of Camtasia. Still works but screen recording is limited to 30 fps. Barry, Short explanation is jack of all trades, master of none. Long explanation is that like many of us, I have been playing with computers for many years. I tend to accumulate hardware and software. Tom Update: 21 March 2021. I just checked and Camtasia 8.6 still works with Windows 10 latest Insider Preview Edition. Version 10.0.21337 Build 21337 Quote
rosy Posted March 21, 2021 Author Report Posted March 21, 2021 Hi Tom My version of Camtasia wouldn't work with W10. they did send me a free fix years back, that worked for a while, but after changing PC's 3 times I couldn't get it to work. I still have the original disc but it's gathering dust somewhere. Had a look at Steam but it looked as if you need a play station / xbox so I left it. Regards Rosy. Quote
jt49 Posted March 21, 2021 Report Posted March 21, 2021 In OBS 1. Add your Display as Source 2. In the Audio Mixer: Activate Desktop-Audio 3. Settings > Output > Recording: Set Path, Recording Quality, Recording Format 4. Settings > Video: For Base Resolution and Output Resolution set or type the resolution of your monitor 5. Click OK 6. Right click in Preview Window: Untick "Enable Preview" 7. Click: Start Recording Quote

It is showing my web cam but I don't see 'Display' anywhere in the menus. Can you point it out? Thanks... Gary Quote
rosy Posted March 21, 2021 Author Report Posted March 21, 2021 Tried a few times but I soon get disenchanted when I can't make things work. So after checking my bank balance I added the latest version of Camtasia to the basket, then changed my mind & looked at something else. Then I got an email from Camtasia saying I had an incomplete item in my basket & that if I completed I could have a 12% discount, (never look a gift horse in the mouth) as the saying goes, so I bit the bullet & bought the up-grade to Camtasia Studio. Gave it a try but it's quite different to my original one, need to look at their tutorials. Rosy. Quote
rosy Posted March 21, 2021 Author Report Posted March 21, 2021 Just recorded my first project with Camtasia Studio. (it's a bit like riding a bike, once you've done it, it all comes back). Happy with my purchase. Rosy. Quote
macian Posted March 21, 2021 Report Posted March 21, 2021 Screen capture is built in with Mac OS Mojave and Catalina. Quote
tom95521 Posted March 21, 2021 Report Posted March 21, 2021 I like my Mac but screen audio recording can be difficult compared to a Windows PC. The latest version of ChromeOS has screen recording but so far nothing I have tried compares to a good Window screen recorder. Sometime I want to try an external HDMI recorder like Atomos Ninja V (for camera and PC recording). https://www.atomos.com/products/ninja-v Tom Quote
Peter S Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 Hi Tom, Have you tried Audio Hijack? https://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/ Peter Quote
Peter S Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 I should perhaps have made it clear that this ONLY records audio. Quote
tom95521 Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 I know that it's possible but it's not as simple as Windows screen recording. Part of the problem is M1 software compatibility. Besides screen recording this is also a problem with Mac remote desktop audio. When I remote desktop into my Windows PC I can hear audio. When I remote desktop into my Mac there is no audio. Sure, there are software solutions to this problem like Airfoil, but they are add ons and usually cost extra. Thanks, Tom Quote
tom95521 Posted April 11, 2021 Report Posted April 11, 2021 Just a quick note on Mac audio. The Mac has many audio input and output channels that can be mixed together. I am using Big Sur and the new M1 silicon Mac mini. I think I finally have the missing audio screen recording issue resolved after watching this video and installing 2 ch Blackhole virtual audio driver. Now Quicktime Player screen recorder is capturing the audio. Audio Hijack might be another option but Blackhole is free and was easy to install and configure. https://existential.audio/blackhole/ Thanks, Tom Quote
