I know that this topic has been discussed before but most people tend to use Irfanview to make their icons. I want to use Phostoshop! I used to have a small 'plugin' that allowed you to save as an .*ico file but I lost it when my hard drive failed. (please don't remind me about back-up - I know i should have done it) Can anyone remember the web site that can provide this plugin please?

Ron,

Did you do a search for "icons"? Here is an old thread that may help:

Icons .

I don't remember now where I found the plugin I use in Photoshop, but a search on Google resulted in the following hits:

http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/ (photoshop plugin)

http://www.icon-editor.net/

http://www.iconcool.com/

http://www.axialis.com/iconworkshop/

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwicontools.html (freeware)

http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_if.html

http://www.hermancompute.com/

http://www.iconedit2.com/

etc., etc.

Most are shareware, but even if you just download a free trial version every time you want to save an icon, there are probably enough there to keep you going for many years. :)

Hello Al, thanks for your reply.

I linked to your first suggestion - http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/ (photoshop plugin) and recognised this as the plugin I had before. I have downloaded it now and have also saved the details in cas I lose it again. Thanks!

Ron & Al

Since I upgraded to Photoshop CS, I have not been able to get PTE to accept my *.ico (Ico (Windows)) file prepared in Photoshop. I have to open it in Irfanview, then do a Image>Decrease Color Depth>16 colors, then reverse the process Image>Increase Color Depth>256 colors and save. Then it works. Don't ask me why.

Ron,

I haven't had a problem saving as a suitable icon with my installation of PS-CS and the plug-in I'm using ("icoformat.8bi").

You may have to convert the image to "Indexed colour" mode first - I had to do this with one of mine. Note also that you have to convert the image mode to 8 bits per channel before you can select "indexed colour".

Thanks Al. Followed your advice re "Indexed Colour" with success. :P
