No doubt a very basic question, but what I could not understand is why when the Masks were created, they were created as a jpeg and not as a png? In my mind, if I want a transparent background, it must be png, yet here, jpeg works.

It’s because they are being used within a mask where black masks out the image and white allows it to show. It’s a slightly different thing to creating a partially transparent image where a PNG  is the right choice.
