Greetings,

The GoPro 11 produces HEVC formatted video files. I see that PTE will play them.

However, the HEVC are supposed to be more compact but still pretty large. If I Convert them in PTE, they come out substantially smaller.

In this example, the HEVC file is 40.7MBs. When Converted, it is only 5.86sMBs.

I don't really see any difference in the quality. Is there any reason not to Convert the HEVC files? I do see the bit rate is reduced as expected. I am concerned about the final size of my projects so I'm more likely to Convert all of my GoPro videos.

Gary

Hi Gary,

Under the same comparison conditions, HEVC encoders produce on 30-50% smaller video file than AVC (H.264) for the same visual quality.

However real-time hardware encoders (in cameras) do not work as efficiently as software encoders on a computer. Hardware encoders compensate reduced quality by increasing a bitrate.

PTE AV Studio by default uses more progressive encoding method - constant quality. It means that a video encoder analyzes every frame (content) and smartely increase or decrease bitrate for a series of video frames according content.

A similar example, saving a JPEG image. You set a desired visual quality from "1" to "11" and resulting file size will depend on how many fine details are shown in your picture.
