Dusty Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 I've just updated my site and included these instructions for downloading shows. This is how I do it, but I need to know if these instructions are good for the general public."Show Information: All of these shows are zipped EXE files. They will play on any Windows based computer, full screen, without any special software required. To download a show, just click on the link, choose the option "save" and select a location to save the file. After download is complete, go to the selected location, double click the .zip file, then double click the .exe file. The show will begin automatically. Press the "Esc" key to quit the show at any time. Shows were created using Pictures to EXE and Adobe Photoshop."~Cindy Quote
Gilio Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 I think this the right text to use Dusty. Cindy, your site is very nice looks good to my. Quote
Ken Cox Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Cindynot being picky butI would addto be safedo a virus check of the zip before opening itthen the command unzip here persnoally i just drag the exe out but some people may not know dragging:)and just doubleclick the exe to make it runken Quote
morturn Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Dustywould you mind if i used your wording on my website? Quote
ronwil Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Just one very small point which has been mentioned before, some of us have the mouse set for single click operation. Double click and you can get a sequence running twice with an obvious "echo" effect. Ron [uK] Quote
Dusty Posted January 15, 2006 Author Report Posted January 15, 2006 Thanks for the help. I'll change the words "double click" to "open." Morturn, be my guest."Show Information: All of these shows are zipped EXE files. They will play on any Windows based computer, full screen, without any special software required. alrobin Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Dusty,A more precise way to download files is to "right-click" on the link, and then select which option you want to use. Quote
ronwil Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 I agree there Al. Dusty's change from "double click" to "open" now brings in that option.Ron [uK] Quote
alrobin Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 Ron,Just to clarify this further, Dusty's "open" applies to opening the zip file and then the slideshow, whereas what I was referring to was the downloading of the file from the website in the first place.Dusty,May I suggest the following wording for clarification?"Show Information: All of these shows are zipped EXE files. They will play on any Windows based computer, full screen, without any special software required. To download a show, just click on the link, choose the option "save" and select a location to save the file. Alternatively, 'right-click' on the link, choose the "save target as" option, and select a suitable location. After download is complete, go to the selected location, open the .zip file, and copy the exe file to the folder of your choice. Then when you double-click on the exe file the show will begin.Press the "Esc" key to quit the show at any time. Shows were created using Pictures to EXE and Adobe Photoshop." Quote
Dusty Posted January 18, 2006 Author Report Posted January 18, 2006 Thank you, Al! I'll add that.~Cindy Quote
ronwil Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 Al"They will play on any Windows based computer.....". I am not sure that that is correct. May I suggest "most" in place of "any"?Ron [uK] Quote
ContaxMan Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 This is getting a bit too involved with too many provisos. How about a brief message on your site and a downloadable "what if it doesn't work for me?" pdf to cover other options? Quote
alrobin Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 Al"They will play on any Windows based computer.....". I am not sure that that is correct. May I suggest "most" in place of "any"?Ron [uK]Well, Ron, maybe Cindy's shows are small enough, or use small enough images, and simple transitions, that they will play on any windows based computer. Those were her words, not mine! However, all other things being equal, PTE will in general work on any windows-based pc. Quote
ronwil Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 AlI agree with all you have written. The only reason why I added the suggested "most" in place of "any" is because within the last week I have been receiving entries for a regional AV competition. A couple of the entries staged a hiccup, not because of my computer but because of their "construction". But it reminded me of some sequences that I have given to people which didn't play on their equipment because of weaknesses in their sound or graphics cards. I hadn't noticed the original comment "...that they will play on any windows based computer. Those were her words, not mine! "RegardsRon [uK] Quote
Dusty Posted January 18, 2006 Author Report Posted January 18, 2006 I didn't think about the system performance difference. My new wording is:"Show Information: All of these shows are zipped EXE files. They will play on most Windows based computers, full screen, without any special software required. To download a show: right click on the link, choose "Save Target As" and select a location. After download is complete, go to selected location, open the .zip file, then open the .exe file. The show will begin automatically. Press the "Esc" key to quit the show at any time. Shows created with Pictures to EXE and Adobe Photoshop."I know this doesn't cover everything, but the people who I'm trying to guide are the ones who are pretty much clueless about the process (I've talked with them!) and if I give them too much information they won't download anything. Thank you all very much for your help! Quote
alrobin Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Cindy,I think you've covered all the bases in a nutshell. Quote
