Control Panel

Help!

This is not strictly a PTE problem but you might be able to help.

In Windows XP, my Control Panel refuses to expose itself for some reason. When I click on Start and then choose Control Panel it does not appear as usual but simply sits in the bar at the bottom of my screen and nothing will entice it to open up fully, even if I click Restore or Maximise.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ron do a search on your C drive for *.cpl to see if the individual elements of the control panel are still there. If you find any they will all run individually by dbl clicking. Also make sure that antivirus is up to date and do a full scan. Did a search and found this maybe it will help. Come back here with results of above and I'll see if I can help further.

Thanks Geoff for your suggestions.

I have now managed to retrieve my Control Panel (with the help of Cornflow) It seems that I must have tried to open the control panel at the same time that Norton Antivirus was doing a scan - this in some way corrupted my files. I don't know the technical details but Brian gave me the instructions to follow and, as if by magic, the panel re-appeared.

We really are lucky to have Cornflow on this forum with all the knowledge that he shares with us. Thanks a heap Brian, it is always appreciated.

Ron
