Composited Anaglyph Sample

3D slideshows are nothing new, we've had a great example or so from one of our forum members a while back, but this is a bit different.

This image wasn't taken with a pair of cameras or with a single camera moved horizontally, but rather made as a composite from 5 separate images. The background mountain frame was taken near Bear Lake adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Coyote image was taken in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Airplane and Lightning were taken from images in a couple of my earlier slideshows.

The background is a jpg, the coyote, lightning, airplane and right side of the mountain were made into PNG files then placed in layers in a Photoshop PSD file the the depth map was composited with ProMagic's 3D Magic Lenticular Designer program. The first and last photos from a twelve frame series were then placed into Anaglyph Maker, a freeware program which creates anaglyphs in multiple ways from a pair of stereoscopic captures.

I think there are some possibilities for creating some exciting imagry ever if you don't have the equipment to take stereoscopic photos. I believe it's possible to create a rather interesting 3D slideshow from composited 2D photos and this is simply a trial to see how it might look.

To see this in 3D use Anaglyph glasses (the 3D glasses with red & cyan colored lenses.

O.K., I was waiting to see if anyone picked up on the possible significance of this - but rather than wait I'll just post another link.

The essence is folks, we can have "animated" 3d slideshows. Once the anaglyph has been created, it's possible to select, copy and paste the 3D segment in another PNG, erase the background and you have a 3D object which when used properly in an anaglyph can have motion, rotation, variable transparency, etc., The possibilities are quite exciting I think. It may take some work to figure out all the details and depth mapping for use, but I suspect we can have some pretty exciting animation for those willing to wear anaglyph glasses to watch.

Hi Ken,

No explanation that I can think of - both are practically identical in terms of code - just one addiional object in the second one. They both end with ESC on all my systems.

Lin,

Thank you for sharing this sample with us. I just viewed Bernard's 3D Paris slideshow and it is very impressive. I like the depth that your slideshow has and with the motion of the plane flying by (in Ver 5) really gives it a real 3D video effect. Just add the buzzing of that small engine plane, animate the lighting hitting the moutain with an explosion (maybe even hitting the plane as it goes by) and we have an opening to a new movie.

Excellent job Lin. This will really get a few people working on new ideas.

Thanks again.

Fred

p.s. - The ESC key worked on both your slideshows without problem on my PC.

Lin,

I know you made the above post back in December but I have been trawling about the forum and came across it.

I have a question if I may? what software did you use to render the final image, and how can it be obtained?.

For a long time now I have been nurturing the idea of going out and creating stereo pairs of images and producing a show, I used to create 3D shows years ago using 2x projectors with polarised filters stuck in front of each lens, the veiwers had paper polarised glasses, I also intend to resurrect these shows by scanning the slides and applying the 3D effect.

I enjoyed your little demo, thanks for sharing it with us.

Hi Tom,

I used a product called Pro Magic Lenticular Designer - Link Below. It's not a "stand-alone" product but rather works with Photoshop to use layers. Essentially you place different "objects" as PNG files on separate Photoshop layers then Lenticular Designer creates the anaglyph with different "depth" profiles which you can adjust through the software. It's primarily a product for 3D printing (lenticular printing) but does work well for 3D creation from 2D images. It's part of a "suite" of products designed to produce a lenticular print. Most products of this type are extremely expensive and not broken out into separate packages. This one is the least expensive I've found which really works as described. It's $279.00 U.S. but if you produce lenticular printing it's very well worth it. I do lenticular prints for some of my clients so could amortize the costs. It's much "easier" to just set up your camera or cameras to take an individual frame the slide the camera over about the width of the human eye separation (approx 2.5 inches) and repeat the frame. I just use two identical inexpensive digital cameras mounted side by side. If you don't have a digital camera amenable, this software is one way to achieve the effect.

I have sent you an e-mail containing a small programme for creating stereo images, have a look at it and let me know if it's of any use.

Tom.

P.S.

Off out now to create some image pairs.......

sorry Lin and thanks Tom... I just viewed your post because long holydais in december.

Excellent job Lin. Since long time I working for this techmologie 3D animated.

I think it is not necessary this soft very expensive but only with Photoshop, SereoPhoto Maker and PTE V5, I have realised this first movement that helicopter in "flying over of the REUNION island" and the first inlaying (church) in "Carnival of Remiremont 3D" but I seach the improvement fot the anaglyph animated.

Best regards,

Bernard
