Hi again folks,

When I go to the link I'm taken to the first of three pages.

1st page = Enter email adsress and name

2nd page = Membership options 1,2&3 years. This displays Visa, Mastercard & American Express options

3rd page = Submit, asking to enter credit card details

I didn't see on any page an option to just download the program.

In anycase I'm taking Lin's recomendation about the program and googled up a site where I was able to download the program

If the program is as good as you say Lin, I thank you for the tip. Windows media player is such a pain when it won't play things because of missing codec's

Hi Mario,

This media player, like any other will not play a video if the codec is missing - no media player can do that. You will still need to have the correct codec. Many codecs are included, but should the author of the AVI or MPEG file use codecs not supported you will still have to find and install them if you want to play the file.

There are other reasons why I prefer this one to Windows Media player including size of code, compatibility and flexiblility, ease of use, no "nanny" nagging, etc.

I am brand new to PTE (still in the wrapper) and have followed your tutorials on PZR. They are brilliant. Your presentation and demonstration makes them incredibly easy to follow and, above all, they work. On first useage, a P and Z combination, I incorrectly remembered your process for inserting Keypoints on the time line and ended up cloning each one from the other. In setup, I separated all the points following which I chose smooth and when I returned to setup they were all glued as one. As far as I can make out everything appears to work OK in preview but it so different from your instructions that I am wondering if it is as reliable a method of performing this operation. I suppose the only way is to burn a DVD and find out.

I must say, though, it does make the process very quick!

I suspect the reason for some confusion concerns what the setup indicators say. When you first look at them pay no attention to the wording but look at the bracket. The default is for them to be "glued" but the wording says "separate here" which is perfectly logical but anti-intuitive. When you click on each of the points which says "separate here" they change to "glue here" Glue here means they are actually separated.

So when you do everthing in linear then go to the keypoints (I recommend choosing the second one) then click on the default "separate here" on each keypoint between the first and last for pan, zoom and rotate respectively, the process separates all keypoints between the first and last at one time.

It may seem counter-intuitive but when you think about what is actually happening it makes sense. I hope this explanation isn't too confusing.

You don't need to burn a DVD to test, just make an executable and see what happens with it. The DVD should work in exactly the same way with the exception of the "viewable" portion where the horizontal ends of each file "may" be cut off depending on the difference in aspect ratio between your monitor and your television. When you are actually making your slideshow if DVD will be the final destination be sure to go to the Project Options, Screen Tab then choose the aspect ration corresponding to your DVD screen display then click on the Tools tab at the bottom of the Objects and Animations screen and choose "Show TV Safe Zone" and keep the areas of the slide you actually want to see within that blue boundary.

Thanks very much for your excellent series, extremely useful for beginners.

I have one question

1. I am using Windows Media Player and I have an option to pause the playback, but I cannot stepback a few frames to replay a comment that I have missed, the rewind arrow is greyed out. I have to replay the whole tutorial. Is there a way round this.

I realize this is a bit late, but with Windows Media Player, you can back up if you pause the player then click on the slider. When you do that you get a button which you can slide backward and forward. Why they disable the fast forward and backward buttons I have no idea.

My gratitude and compliments to Lin for helping me understand the pan/zoom/rotation (pzr) functions in PTE. I've used PTE for 8 years, but have avoided the pzr functions. I don't read manuals, and I tried to use intuition to figure out the pzr features, without success.

I tried Lin's videos on pzr functions, and discovered it was very easy, once you understand the insertion of transition points.....almost embarrassingly easy. I did successfully finish my project. The pzr feature adds another dimension to the slide show.

And, thanks to Igor for the many intuitive features coded into the pzr functions. The right and left clicking always seems to bring up what I'm looking for.

So again, thanks Lin for taking the time to produce such a valuable resource for us PTE users. I owe you one. I'm your neighbor to the north, in the "Fort". Maybe sometime on a trip to Denver I can buy you a round.

Hi Folks,

I've decided to create a series of AVI tutorials which I call "PTE for Smarties". A very popular series of books for computer users called variously "Windows for Dummies", etc. were written to help beginners learn to use Windows and other software.

Well, I don't think there are any "dummies" using PTE. The fact that you have chosen PTE already demonstrates your intelligence so I elected to call this series of beginning and intermediate tutorials "PTE for Smarties" !!

I've created the first few of a continuing series on the elements of Pan, Zoom and Rotate. After all, the primary reason users want to use version 5 of PTE is for the Ken Burns effects of pan, zoom and rotate and this first AVI will jump-start your understanding. It's not intended to be a thorough and complete guide to PZR because later installments will get into esoteric uses of these functions, but this will get the beginner started and the continuing series will eventually make a PTE "expert" out of the beginner.

I chose the AVI format rather than Flash or more compressed modes because it's compatible with nearly every PC without the need to load additional software or drivers. I will continue to add links to this post as time goes on. Necessarily AVI files are larger but hopefully will be worth your time.

A note of caution for all who create PNG objects and expect their slideshows to be shown on computers which "MAY" have different resolution from the one you created the slideshow on. NEVER use "original size" for your objects unless your entire slideshow uses "original" size. In other words "DO NOT MIX" original and fit to slide objects in the same slideshow.

Yes, it's "much" easier to properly position your png overlays when you are creating your slideshow and use the "original size" for your objects, BUT when the slideshow is played on computers with different screen resolutions these objects will "not" fit properly and not properly overlay the original portion of the screen which it is designed to mask. So, remember to never mix "original" and "fit to slide" or "cover slide" in your objects. Keep them consistent.

Note: if for any reason you can't see the video it could be that your system doesn't have the necessary video codec. I used Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2. If you don't have this one you can download it from here thanks to Ken Cox

Note: the above is an older AVI I made in response to Jean Pierre's (JPD) suggestion on how to rotate a helicopter rotor blade horizontally for a simulation which one of our forum members was creating. JPD explained it but being a French native speaker some were not completely clear so I created a brief tutorial to show his method which works very well. When you see the AVI remember that the rectangles will be made invisible via the 100% control of opacity. In the demo animation I created you can see how this works in practice.

You ask about PDF's of Lin's tutorials, I know you are used to getting Ed's and Mine at the Photo Club, but I find Lin's "movies" quite helpful and better that our PDFs.

They run in Windows Media Player, I watch them all the way through then I open PTE and re-run Lin's show, pausing it while I go to PTE and try to replicate what he just showed. I go back and forth between the two while working through his demo.

You can always drag the control point on the avi back a little to watch something again if you are having trouble understanding something.

I'd like to post a very belated THANK YOU LIN for these tutorials. I'm preparing an "intermediate O&A tricks in PTE" demo for our club's AV Group in March, and I've found several of these tutorials inspirational in clearing some of the fog out of my own head regarding some of the tricks. I'll be pointing everyone in the group to this forum thread and recommending they have a close look at several of the tutorials and examples(notably, and initially, numbers 1, 5, 6, 8 and 13).

This is a wonderful resource for all of us, Lin. Great service to the community; thanks so much.

Hi Dom,

Thanks for noting this - actually, all the links are wrong now. My Domain name expired and my host didn't notify me. The Domain went into Redemption and the host wants more money to renew it than I can afford so I purchased a different domain name for the site. After about three weeks I can repurchase the domain and everything will then work as normal "unless" someone buys it before I can renew it.

lin-evans.net no longer will work but lin-evans.org is up and running and pointing to the same website. This means I must change all my links from lin-evans.net to lin-evans.org. I will try to do this for all my PTE Made Easy files but it will take a little while since the entire link is not visible on the PTE site. I must copy and paste the link location in the address line then make the changes, copy it again and paste it in the edited line. It will take a while I'm afraid.

Downloaded your Tutorial #11 (Sound 1 & 2), but there is only sound content, no video.

Did I do something wrong, or is it just a picture free .avi file.

I use version 6 and can't get enough of it. I want to add music to specific slides and groups of slides.

Hi Roy,

It seems you may have run up against a fairly common issue where a codec used in one of my video's is missing from your system.

The easiest way to be sure you can play all the videos is to use a player which provides most common codecs. The one I recommend is free and available here:

Just download it and install it and you should be able to see as well as hear all of my AVI tutorials.

Hi George,

Sorry, I should have posted a link but my original domain name was lost and in the process of changing the links I mistakenly omitted the link to the template.

I have since simplified the template by replacing the images with a single image, removing the keyframes and setting the time to 60 seconds. Now you can click on the link (22. a) and simply follow the same instructions for copy/paste of the mask container and set your own slide for 60 seconds and probably everything will work correctly. You "may" have to adjust the size of the mask container but it's set for a full screen default and will work as is in most cases.
