tomg Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 I am giving an AV presentation to a group of 40 people in a large room ( not quite a "Hall"). I'm using my Laptop and a digital projector. I currently have some powered speakers - a bass unit with a couple of satellite speakers but they are not very good. Can anyone recommend a decent set ?Regards,Tom Quote

fh1805 Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Hi Tom,Make sure that whatever you get is the right quality. There are lots of active (i.e. powered) speakers out there that are fine if all you want to do is play "muzack" on your PC while you work away on it. If you're doing shows in large rooms/small halls you will need something better. I would suggest that you don't want to be going to a PC shop. You want to be going to a good quality hi-fi or music shop. I have found that my best source is a local outfit that specialises in providing kit to pop bands and such like. They really understand the requirements of playback in venues larger than your front room.Good luck with your searches! Quote
Barry Beckham Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 TomI was introduced to a set of speakers by Maureen Albright a few years ago and they are superb. I now have two sets, one for lectures and one for home use. They comprise a powered bass box and two tiny speakers that plug into the bass box. They are easily powerful enough for a 40 person room and I have used them at the Maltings in Ely which holds 200 people and they are good enough for that size hall too. I have never found them inadequate in any demo venue I have been to and I have been to quite a few.I paid less than £100 for the set and I think they are perfect for demos and especially for PTE shows, That is what I bought them. You can get them from the link below. They make a great desktop PC speaker system too.http://www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/product_r...eries/index.aspIts the M series that I have and the price now is £99.99 Quote
Ken Cox Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index....ost&p=32120=have always used the Acoustic Energy Aego speakers which many AV workers have seen & heard at my lectures & then bought themselves. A new range came out in December 2005 which can be seen on their web site at Aego M-system They can be obtained here We and many of our friends have been very pleased with these and they certainly fill a large hall and can be used at home. There are some threads on the PTE Forum relating to these speakers.Best wishesMaureenKEN Quote
RonH Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 I can also vouch for these speakers. The base is rather larger than you might expect but not as big or as heavy as some powered speakers. One of the problems I have with powered speakers is that it is difficult to adjust the sound without going around the back of the speakers or bringing up the volume control on the screen so you have to be sure that you are set correctly before you start. This is sometimes difficult to do before the audience is in the hall as a large audience ‘absorbs’ the sound.I also have a pair of Yamaha 300 for larger venues, these have a detachable mixing desk attached to the back of one of the speakers (the cables are in the other speaker) into which you can plug microphones etc and, of course adjust the volume, tone etc. from your computer desk. Both are really good for ‘touring’ with AV programmes. Good speakers are well worth the money!Regards Quote
tomg Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 Well, from the responses it seems clear that the speakers to get are the Acoustic Energy "Aego - M -System". It was mentioned that they are now £100 but looking at the website the price quoted is £129.95. Am I looking at the right system? The speaker set I'm looking at comes in either black or white. Stands for the satellite units are available, too, at £29.95. They do look useful - has anyone used them ?Regsrds,Tom Quote
