Until now I have not succeeded in using my own created icons using my PTE4.1 vers 16, nor using it on my MMB4.901. I have a registered IconEdit2, also a GIF2ICO for DOS, and yesterday installed two sharewares of the latest and best IconMakers for Xp. I am wondering why my icons are not accepted by PTE though I made them in the required 32X32 size. Are you experiencing the same difficulty with using your own Icons? Thanks.

Manny ,

When you make your 32x32 icons ... they must be in the 256 color format ... otherwise PTE or MMB wont accept/reconize them. This is the usuall issue of many users here as to why their icons wont work.

Make sure your ICON EDITOR program setting is outputing the ico file being made to 256 color. Alot of ICO EDITOR's (at install) get the pcs desktop color setting and set as output color setting for ico's made ... Im sure your XP is not running a 256 color desktop.

I create the images for my Icons in Photoshop, then use Irfanview to re-size to 32x32, to create them. Finding that in 256 Colors PTE would not accept, I decreased the colour depth in Irfanview to 16 and all has been well.

Ron,

This is the way I do my icons, too. IrfanView is so versatile!

And I am able to get mine to work in 256 colours. :D

256 colours has just worked for me in Irfanview. 256 comes up as the default in decrease colour depth, so this time I clicked on it. Probably not the reason why it worked but it did. Hope Manny has got his problem sorted now.

Resize in PhotoShop:

Image ---> Image Size --->[ Width =32; Height =32 ]

Color reduction in PhotoShop:

Image ---> Mode ---> Indexed Color ---> [ Colors =3...to...256 ] :D

Oleg,

What file type do you save it as?

I have found that icon success is measured in icon file size. You may think you've done everything correctly, but if the icon file size is larger than 2238 bytes for 32x32x256colors then it won't work in PTE. This shows as 3KB in Windows Explorer, so you have to get the exact number from the icon file "properties" sheet. Further, for 16x16x16colors, 318 bytes is the magic number.

Because icons can have oddly complex contents, just experiment with your icon tools until the file size is correct for the intended icon image size and color depth. Then you can count on it working in PTE.

I suggest making and using only a 32x32x256 icon for PTE. Windows will reduce to 16x16 where needed, and will do it with good quality.

I've solved the problem folks out of the advices you gave me. What a blessing to read your ideas. I did not blame PTE nor MMB since in both my icons didn't work. So it is my ignorance on the matter that is to blame. And I feel relieved with your inputs. Thanks a lot again Ken, Think, Nobeefsfu, OGL, Al, and Ronwil. I just discovered downloaded too your Irfanview, and will just be installing. :D

Hello, Al!

What file type do you save it as?

In PhotoShop you can save "Indexed Color" pictures as PSD, PDF, BMP, GIF... etc.

(not as JPG!)

You can use "Save for Web" option: GIF, PNG, JPG. But JPG... as 24 bit only :P

Hi, Oleg,

But you can't save in Photoshop as ".ico". So you would still need another utility like IrfanView to convert to an icon. Do any other popular image-editing programs allow you to save as an icon?

Sorry, sorry, sorry!

For converting bmp/gif in .ico format I use "homemade" (from BoNi) PhotoShop Plugin.

I'm more and more believing that my Photoshop installation is apparently "Unplugged" :)

When Oleg flips the switch on Photoshop it must dim the lights :P

Maybe that is how the great Blackout of 2003 was started... somewhere in Adobeland, USA??? ;)

As stated, you can use Photoshop to create ICON files as Oleg outlined above. If you just want the Icon for Windows use, you can save as a .BMP file from within Photoshop and then rename it to .ICO file. Windows can use these, but PTE seems to have a problem using them.

If you want a Photoshop Free/Shareware "Plugin" that can save files as .ICO format, you may want to try the following link and download theirs (it works quite well with PTE):

It was crystal clear to me. Thanks to all for a good laugh! :lol:

And Fred, I have the scripts promised in another thread ready to send tonight. I decided to debug some tough windows problems in prep for my target show idea. I hope this saves you the trouble of the same windoze debug.

Thanks and I look forward to receiving. The less the buggy anything is, the better - especially when you are trying to learn something new!
